The M25 coach crash was not given the highest priority by the ambulance service.

The 999 call reporting that a coach had overturned and passengers were seriously injured was logged as a category B call, one classed as not life-threatening and with a target to reach the scene within 14 minutes.

The first ambulance crew arrived 14 minutes after the first 999 call and immediately called for more paramedics, a South Central England Ambulance Service spokesman said.

But an ambulance source said staff can only go on what information is given in a 999 call and then use computer software to run through a checklist designed to sift the most serious calls for a rapid response.

The source said: “We have to go on the information we receive and most road traffic accidents are classed as category B.

“They should have used a bit of common sense when they heard it was a coach but they cannot over-ride the software.”

Six vehicles were dispatched initially. The spokesman said: “We implemented our Major Incident Plan at the earliest opportunity, which ensured the best possible response. The victims received the best care.”

Yet another case of the government over relying on technology rather that experianced staff using technology to assist.

This approach has been endorsed by Attorney General ever since 1951. CPS Code

There is nothing I detest more than being told 'computer says no' because its faced with an unusual or unforeseen circumstance, and then whoever is on the phone (it is usually on the phone to call centres granted) tells me that the computer's 'infallible' decision is final, and claims that there is absolutely noone within the organisation with the ability to exercise discretion over it!

Sounds rather like speed cameras doesn't it?

Seems that modern society's reliance on IT has resulted in the concept of GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) being conveniently forgotten in all too many cases!

I don’t understand why people so much faith in computers. As they have been designed and built buy humans. The programmes are written buy humans; therefore there is a chance for error. It is quite scary how much faith we have in them :( . Computers do not make mistakes, but the people who programmed them can.
