I have two.
  • The A303 from where it starts (J8 of the M3) down past Stonehenge and into the west country. I love that drive, which offers some splendid views. Of course, I avoid Stonehenge on a holiday Saturday.
  • The A82 in Scotland between Glasgow and Fort William. It's about 80 miles, uncongested, and has some good straights so that you can maintain a good speed. It's a very scenic route.

What's your favourite road?

I refuse to answer on the grounds it will immediately become infested with mobile cameras. :D

Yes, I understand your feeling, but living in North Yorkshire perhaps I'm more fortunate than you in that respect. :)

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Invergarry to the Isle of Skye...can get a bit heavy on fuel and there are very few filling stations

Quite a few in the Highlands. The A835 North of Ullapool (Ullapool to nowhere  ) is a fantastic road, well surfaced and traffic free.

The A169 Pickering to Whitby when it isn't clogged up with tourists.

And the A640 across the Pennines (between Denshaw and Outlane), fairly unused since the M62 opened, nice twisty uphill section with some decent sightlines and overtaking opportunities and a long straight over the top.

But my all time favourite is the B6277 from Alston toward Middleton in Teesdale, down to around Langdon Beck.

The A354 Blandford to Salisbury is nice as far as Coombe Bissett. Busy these days sadly.

You do realise that where it goes through Wiltshire and Somerset it is loaded with scameras?

I'd say most of the M40 and the M5 from around Taunton to Exeter is very nice - never much traffic and just overall very relaxing to drive.

Also the A50 from Stoke to the M1 is good (apart from the odd times when you get one lorry overtaking another).

One without holes big enough to get the van into.

The A37 between Dorchester and Yeovil. I drive this road most weekends and the road surface is really good, no pot-holes, plenty of deviation in height and it gets very twisty as you approach Yeovil. Its got some overtaking lanes up the bigger hills but there are plenty of other opportunities to drop a couple of gears and overtake the inevitable Asda truck that I come across on that road. Traffic is always light, never come across a traffic jam once.
To top it all, ive only seen a camera van on it once and everybody was flashing their lights in its vicinity so I doubt he was doing much business that day!

There are a few, but not many. Possibly about three in each direction. I have RoadAngelPlus™, so the cameras don't bother me too much. It's the damned vans I have to watch for!

Minehead to Lynmouth over porlock hill.

Just a fabulous drive in summer.

The road home from work.
Although there's one through Wareham Forest which is fun. Especially if there's noone else around and you can get up to 80...

B862 east of Fort Augustus, just south of Loch Ness. Much less busy than the northern side of the Loch, beautiful scenery. I understand there are a few days in the year in Scotland when it doesn't rain!

Just about all rural roads on the Isle of Man, plenty of good twisty bits, excellent surfacing, and the 'Ballamohda Straight', from Foxdale to Castletown is a couple of miles of straight unrestricted road.
Personally I prefered the twisty bits on roads I hadn't driven before, this really was about reading the road ahead and driving accordingly.
Of course with no speed limit it is the drivers responsibilty to drive at appropriate speed.

I quite like the A595 round the Cumbrian coast - out of season but the Scamera partnership tend to hang out on it periodically.

The road from Peel to Kirk Michael, including the 'devil's elbow'. :D

There's a section which is almost straight and has no junctions adjoining but has a nasty raised section of tarmac, almost like a jump, 1-2 miles outside Kirk Michael. Very interesting... :yikes:

The M20 down to the Channel Tunnel, whenever I go over to the continent, as the driving roads and conditions over there are much better.

Abso-bloody-lutely! Another, nearby, is the road from Luccombe that takes you over Dunkery Beacon, complete with 'handbrake hairpins'; an absolute Theme-Park ride!

Other faves are:-
Sychnant Pass parallel to the A505 at Penmaenmawr, alas in Brainstorm-land.
The B-road that follows Hadrian's Wall from Carlisle to Newcastle.
In my immediate area, there is 'Cut Hedge Lane', a scary ten-foot six road that links Coggeshall Hamlet with Bradwell Village - completely unreadable, but three miles of huge, rectum-nipping fun at night.
And my driving 'bullseye'. The Stelvio Pass, that one day I will drive in an old straight-six Healey 3000 MkII or RS200 that, having attained the summit, I will expire with the biggest, stupidest grin ever seen on a corpse!
