Robin is a helicopter pilot, based out of RAF Shawbury, I hope that he wasn't involved.

Thanks for your concern lads!

I wasn't involved, but thats pretty much all I can say for the time being. I'm sure you understand.

Condolences go out to the family of the deceased, and hopes for a speedy recovery to the others involved.

It seems Shropshire is a hotbed of advanced/safe driving who else is from the fine county of Shropshire?

Born in Shrewsbury, educated in Newport and Baschurch...

As I'm sure you're now aware, the deceased was a veteran civilian instructor, and the two aircraft that came together were from CFS(H) and 660 Sqn. Everyone else involved is expected to make a full recovery.

I wouldn't like to conjecture as to the causes until the board deliver their findings.

Thoughts and condolences go out to the individuals and families affected.

I guess any ejecting device for a helicopter would be difficult to engineer. You can't go up and if you go to the side, which side do you go to? Air bags, big air bags?

Dittto/

Regulars to this site will be aware that the Swiss lost another of their beloved family .. in a plane crash. This incident occurred two weeks before his brother Ferdl died when hit by a multi-defective artculated lorry.

Rudi's body was never recovered and a very Catholic family will always light a candle and make a silent prayer for anyone affected by such incidents. By doing so .. I think as whole - those who knew him also remember their own loss too - and empathise very much.

Thus.. our sincerely caring thoughts will be with those affected by tragedy like this.

Without wishing to appear flippant or disrespectful, I tip my hat to anyone who has the co-ordination and skill to fly rotary wing.
I hate the blessed things, they defy the laws of aerodynamics IMHO. And if you saw the unfeasible arangement of gearboxes and levers that keeps a Chinook in the air you'd understand what i mean.

Do (full function collective pitch) models count? My last big hobby before Safe Speed was RC helicopters.

One extra problem you have to face with models is that the controls sort-of reverse depending on the orientation of the model.

Yep .. our police helicopter pilot and the local air ambulance service .. have skills and expertise which warrant full admiration and their work is rather "taken for granted" these days.

IMHO yes, almost more so. I've tried it...damned difficult, at least modern ones have piezo gyros.

I prefer to think that they just understand those laws a little more deeply ;)

Who else was into RC?

I did 1/10th off road buggy racing for years then moved on to aircraft, a Chris Foss "Acro-Wot" and then a ducted-fan Byrom F16. I remember seeing one of the first gas turbine powered conversions up at Elvington, absolutely incredible - I admire those guys, one mistake and it's £20k up in flames.
