I'm staggered that the Highway Code, DVLA Online, the Passport Office and DTI Trade Info are on the list.

This from the people who want to bring us the wonderful computerised road pricing scheme.

Folks

It's not what it seems. Most of the sites pages will be accessed via a gateway site, it just means you won't have to surf the web, just bookmark the single web-site. I have used the tax disc renewal and it worked really well, with my disc arriving in the post only a few days later.

Yes, it's more a case of moving everything under one roof.

Instead of some motoring stuff being at the HA site and some being at the DfT site and more being on the DVLA site you'll have one government portal.

If they do things right then it will make things easier to find. If they do it wrong then......

But doubtless an opportunity to spin content, bury bad news and actually lose 'certain materials'. Countless millions of web links into government content will be broken.

As Paul says, the main problem is that a great deal of content will be lost because they either don't think it is important or they can't be bothered to convert it. Also the gov't is VERY bad at redirecting links to the appropriate replacement sites.

Also many of the sites use a specific style to appeal to certain groups or to get a point across, a generic site can be very dry and boring and inappropriate in many cases.

However I can see that a lot of the sites are very niche and probably manually edited. These easily be contained within one of the larger content-managed sites.

I think the "vehicle licensing online" is referring to removing the standalone version of the site, ie. vehiclelicence.gov.uk, not scrapping it as a whole.

There is no reason why existing urls can't be kept, but you knew that already.

Why could they not have said "Over 551 government web sites to be merged in to one place to make access easier"?
They appear to be saying "Over 551 web sites to close for your convenience"?!

I'm beginning to think this is a case of making some news where there is none.
