Vine's prog from next Monday has a new quest.

Voting for the road user/vehicle the average R2 listener wants "orf the road" :hehe:

 .. this should be revealing .. as the prog seems to attract Mr outraged Waily v Mr outraged Lentilmuncher on most days :rotfl: .. but we love it anyways :hehe:

Today had the "pre-prog" launch in which the cyclist featured more than once.. especially the red light jumpers  , pavement "artistes" :furious: :banghead: :hissyfit: :furious: :censored:

Followed by the mumpty in the Chelsea Tractor.. the BMW driver .. and the chav in the souped up Corsa ..with the Micra driven by Alf and Ethel of senior years threatening to "burn away" the "young pretender" at the traffic lights to win this "coveted prize of being the road user we want to see the least of on our roads  An also-runner is the motorbiker from hell who performs wheelies as he accelerates hard down residentials .. The mobile phone user also featured fairly high in the initial "feeler charts" on this prog

But way ahead of any of these on the prog's short list of those revving up for "poll position" was .../

any person who wears a hat.. from trilby to bonnet.. to straw boater to plaid or tweed cap to :yikes: -h-h-hoody!

:o

Steven Norris - former Minister of Transport who is a keen biker and driver wrote:

My pet hate is anyone who wear a hat. I stay well clear of these. They are more than likely to be elderly... in an elderly British car [i] shich has never ever exceeded 80 mph

Blimey! :) 8-)

Vine did remind him (spoilsport :P ) that it's not exactly legal to drive at 80 mph - to which Steve Norris replied that these drivers drive badly at 40 mph all the time.

:rotfl:

IAM president was invited to speak on the prog. He mentioned that defensive driving.. keeping a gap.. extending a gap when tailgating .. observing, anticipating and planning by allowing space and time were the keys to safety on the road .././ but had to spoil it with "keeping to a speed limit keeps you safe from speed cameras

Aha.. COAST

Both said that the "holier than thou militant cyclist" was damaging cycling.. but then since the authorities fail to provide adequate cycling lanes and routes .. it was hardly surprising that some have the  :soapbox: :hoppingmad: :loco: :hissyfit: :boxedin: ignore :trafficlight: attitude :stirthepot: and both agreed that cyclists would do better to obey the rules of the road like anyone else

But having said that.. both said they do ride bicycles a lot .. it's fun and quite safe really  Certainly NOT their pet hates.. though they were surprised White Van Man did not get mentioned ..

So.. what do we want to see off the road.. apart from TALIVANS  and Gatsos .... and Monitrons..

Definitive list unveiled on Vine's Monday prog by the way

:flamethrow: Micras.

I saw one doing more than 40mph. Once.

But I suppose if Micras were banned then the people who drove then would get something else and drive it considerably slower than is really necessary instead.

I dunno, I'm rather fond of that Micra that has a 350Z engine instead of rear seats :)

And voting off cas being driven by someone in a hat is a stroke of genius. It covers doddering old people, ditzy blonde gold-digger types who think the rear view mirror is for checking their lipstick AND chavs in their burberry baseball caps all in one single entry. It also covers police, but I think the politicians have mostly voted them off the roads anyway.

Yeah. That's my view too. Utterly tragic.

When you have all the time in the world, and there is no pressure from speeding traffic... and if you get it wrong, it only takes a few more seconds to get it RIGHT...?

People who cannot park straight!
If they cannot manage THIS simple task, what is the rest of their driving like? :o
Image
Thats two spaces occupied there!
And as for this clown who arrogantly parked on the end of a line of cars, reducing the lane behind him, he should be jailed!
Image
When asked to move it, he reversed away and abandoned it in front of several parked cars, blocking them in, and the access to the brewery delivery vans!!

I think you've been mislead by the sheer size of the VW!
The spaces are big enough for a volvo estate as long as the driver is not too portly!
You should see the spaces around here - the council multi-story ones in Kendal are about 6 inches wider than my car, either side of the wing mirrors - and if you park across the line you get a fixed penalty ticket for occupying two spaces when you only paid for one! :o
Mind you they did misplace 1.3 million pounds due to an accounting error - they have to make it up somewhere, otherwise it might threaten the officials gold plated pensions! Even the guys that goofed in accounts got to retire on full pension AIUI!

So you can have two spaces if you buy two tickets?

No, apparently you can't. There was a thread on a motorcaravan group recently where someone complained that there wasn't adequate parking for his LWB Ducato-based creation - so he parked in two bays, paid for and displayed two tickets, and still got a PCN!

Yup. Decriminalised parking enforcement at work there. It's all about the money.

toyota picnic.

generally noticed as often driven by some old fart at about 35mph, regardless of road or condition and oblivious to the world outside his picnic.

You have to hand it to the Vine prog

On each show .. we have a plug for this "vote".

So far.. we appear to have.. ..

Oh dear.. them cyclists will scream.. "blasphemy .. infamy .. they all got it in for me! and Woe! Woe and thrice WOE "

As cyclists are named more than once in the "jingle"

But fear not our lycra clad louts, pavement pretzels, muesli munching muppets and the truly committed Franklin fanatic and the COAST commuters   only .. er .. teasing  :D 8-)

far ahead of you still are

1. caravans ( that episode of TG comes to mind . Truly the guys at their best.. apart from the "Fly Drive 'holiday'"

2. horse boxes. (Now .. how often do you come across these - Appleby Show apart.. - and whilst this is a policing nightmare and last year .. Cumbria and Durham were both called to shock incidents .. generally a very pleasant and entertaining spectacle. )

3. anyone wearing a hat (oi.. :? Leave my lid alone! Keeps my hair in style and dead flies splatting against my head )

4. Lorries. (er.. and how exactly does Tesco get the goods so that you shop and they drop?  )#

5. 4x4. Hmmmm. Depends on make and where used and who drives it.

6. Tractors. But you wanna eat things? How else to we till the fields?

7. Taxis.. Now steady on! I use a taxi when I've been out and about. I likes me claret  but I never drive after even ONE drinky. I have never had a problem with any taxi driver so far.. but then I think they do know what I do for a living  (I've been in the papers on occasion here  complete with a photo  )

8. BMW drivers. (Actually .. quite a lot know what they are doing... and NO.. I do not have one. Some of the Swiss riff-raff do.. but they "understand the car" .. and I drive a nice solid family VOLVO!)

9. Chavs in souped up Corsas and Micras. Well... they have the bling .. but we have the ping

Joint 9

9. The elderly. Look .. most are still OK and 5% should accept their age has go the "better of them"

So around 75% have becone "Sunday Drivers".. enjoying the scenery at a slowish plod. So what? SO long as they are safe.. being COAST in behaviour .. should not be an issue for a younger COAST driver, rider, cyclist

10. Motorbikes. OK.. some riders can be/are a nightmare. But we are talking of perhaps a rogue 5% which include "middle aged farty trying to regain and re-visit his "yoof" and young blood on a suicide mission which has to involve the rituial of doubling the ton on our Teesdale "run". Be warned.. we have some well trained cops who can handle their speed .. and Co Durham is watching you watching yourselves behave like tw:censored:ts out there .. and have the stealth and skill to pounce and trounce you! :o

But the rest .. the norm.. we have no real issues.

But all the same .. Vine has it wrong of course. It's not the car.. but the DRIVER or RIDER or CYCLIST in charge of those wheels.

It should not be about voting anyone;s choice of transport off the road.. but how best we can educate to achieve pride in driving/biking/cycling and develop those COAST skills to the nearest we can to our personal "bests" as a constant.

I notice you offer no argument against wanting these off the roads ;)

Usually at the most inconvinient times, and on a stretch of road where there is no chance to overtake for a good 10 miles or so. I accept that you have to go slowly for the benefit of the horse, but would it really hurt to pull over and let people past once in a while. I do whenever I have a load that requires me to go slowly.

Surely a better answer would be "speed limiters", also the 40mph limit on SCs

6. Tractors. But you wanna eat things? How else to we till the fields?
See horseboxes, though in my experience about 50% of tractor drivers will pull over and let you past. It would be nice if they didn't choose rush hour as a good time to use one of the main commuter routes between Aylesbury and Milton Keynes though!

Quote:
7. Taxis.. Now steady on! I use a taxi when I've been out and about. I likes me claret  but I never drive after even ONE drinky. I have never had a problem with any taxi driver so far..
I've had plenty of problems with them, though I recognise that they are an essential service. My GF puts it best when she refers to taxi plates as "stupid plates" as in "then I noticed the car had stupid plates, so I backed off a bit and it's a good job I did because he just pulled into where I was about to be without looking and turned right across oncoming traffic that had to slam on". This is not an isolated incident either. Then again a police crackdown on taxis in Aylesbury discovered 47 identical driving licences.

8. BMW drivers. (Actually .. quite a lot know what they are doing... and NO.. I do not have one. Some of the Swiss riff-raff do.. but they "understand the car" .. and I drive a nice solid family VOLVO!)
I imagine this one is refering to the stereotype rather than the car. A lot of BMW drivers drive Vectras these days. (and I must pity them. I have never before encountered a FWD car that suffers from completely random snap oversteer at around town speeds)

I think you'll find that, with the possible exception of 4x4s, these poll results are really about types of drivers, just wrapped up in the stereotypes of the cars that go with them. I suspect some here may be taking it too seriously.

At this point a potentially interesting discussion broke out about drivers wearing hats. I thought it could possibly be important enough to split to a new topic: http://www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12630

The ones around here have threats on. (or had, they might have removed them now)
"£75 fine if we catch you littering" or words to that effect. Lovely. Because they never leave a mess in the road.

Not wanting to rant, but;

1. With no vans how do people expect tradesmen to go about their business.

2. With no lorries, the supermarket shelves would be empty

3. I drive a LR defender 110, a good portion of my milage is supporting charity / motorsport events. I would like to see someone in a Mondeo taking injured people off tracks up the West Highland Way etc. If we're not off road, we still have the capability to carry a medic + lots of gear.
