Its funny - I've played all the Carmaggedon games and all the GTA games from 2 onwards.

I don't go round punting pedestrians (although I feel like it some times..), I don't go round steeling cars and shooting people with SMGs (although I feel like it some times...), I don't go round jumping off anything that looks even vaguely like a ramp etc etc etc...

Besides...the GTA series are all 18s, so why are kids playing them BEFORE learning to drive......

If I had a favourite game series it would be Doom.

To be fair, I've killed every single zombie and demon I've ever met in the real world.

So we have teenagers who can't separate a game from real life.
The question needs to be asked why?
Also I have experience with teenagers who want to “modify” their “rides” because they have watched the Fast and the Furious, and played the need for speed series of games(these teenagers would probably drive like loons anyway). I also know teenagers want to blame anyone or thing else other than themselves if they do something wrong ESPICALLY if you give then the excuse!

I have also noted how my skill at driving games diminishes, when I am drinking beer.

So does the skill at real driving:

One pint: I'm OK to drive, but rather more concentration than usual is required.

Two pints: I'm OK to drive (just) but I'd better be really careful. Extreme concentration is required but it's still possible to drive safely.

Three pints: I'm OK to drive. Period.

Four pints: Who cares?

Five pints: Did I really drive home last night?

Not that I've ever driven after more than two pints.

Hadn't noticed this thread earlier (thanks smeggy).

Anyway,

I like first person shooters (like Doom/Half-life etc.) - does that make me want to get out a gun? No. I like driving games - does that make me want to go out and drive like a boy racer? No. I like GTA - does that make me want to attack people with baseball bats and steal cars? No.

Driving games do not make young people drive like boy racers. Boy racers make themselves drive like boy racers.

Naturally though, I'm sure this report will encourage someone to ask for driving games to be banned, and then the government can give itself a pat on the back for having "done something".

I don't understand why the "BAN IT" mob can't understand some people are nutters  (for want of a better word) and will engage in such activities regardless of TV/Video/Music etc. We had murder, crime etc before TV and video etc.

To me they seem unable to accept people are responsible for their own actions.

Perhaps it is easier to blame something, then to accept some people are just downright evil. :(

I remember the fun I had with a game called postal

Its the same old argument when teens go mad and kill / beat people. Its all Marilyn Manson's fault! Wrong. The kid's obviously a nutter to begin with. I've been listening to MM since I was 14 and it never did me any harm *twitch*

Doom 3 only came out about eighteen months ago.

Mind you, I recently replayed the whole series, and Doom II (1994) is still a great game.

It is.

You should have a look at the Doomsday project. They have updated the engine to modern standards (ie. OpenGL, realistic lighting and optional mouselook) and there are a whole bunch of upgrades you can add on like proper 3D models, high res texures, high quality music etc. etc.

My Doom install is now about a gig in size and that's without any extra levels, just UDoom, Doom2, Final Doom, Heretic, Hexen and DeathKings.

Got to love Doom III as well, it's been a long time since a game has genuinely scared the crap out of me

Have you played the Thief series?

The only games I've actually thumped escape and walked away from...

Did you know that the original Doom was a 18 cert when it came out?

1000 thanks, Lum!

I was utterly unaware of this - I'm downloading the 50 Meg Doom 2 wall pack now....

Sky have come up with a follow story:

Gamers 'Make Bad Drivers'

I found the source PR from APA:

Within it is a link to their study:

i still play it now and again. most new games are the same so i sometimes pick up the old classics and play them. one of my favourites is railroad tycoon. i still play that now and it must be coming up to 20 years old now

How do you simulate drunken driving though? Only thing I can think of is to have massive controller lag and there's plenty of games out there which achieve that already.

That said, getting people drunk and making them play GT4 or another good simulator, then showing them the video the following day may be a good educational tool. Perhaps the police could set one up in a pub car park instead of just following random people who leave the pub and get into a car?

i cant say from experience as i wont drink if i am driving the following day (im almost teetotal) but i would hazard a guess that you could have a blurred screen, sloppy handling, headlights dazzling you as they pass etc etc etc. then again, i guess that would be a simulator which already exists

You realise you could get the same effect from driving my grandad's old Mk4 Escort van? :)

(or a new Mondeo)

LMAO Seriously, even if I did, do you REALLY think I'd share it?!
