As a studion cycling/fitness professional at the University of Birmingham, I was saddened and disappointed at the ireesponsible behaviour of a number of cyclists on my way home last night.

At some red traffic lights and while the pedestrian lights were on green a cyclist at full speed (at least wearing high visibility jacket )) rode though the lights - narrowly missing a group of students.

Further into my journey ..all other cyclists were wereaing dark or grey clothing with poor or no lights on their bicycles.. Later on.. I noticed yet another dark shadow cycling through the red lights.

In the hope that these fine idiots read your fine magazine, they may reflect on their arrogance and stupidity. On such occasions I can only sympathise with motorists faced with a grey blur near miss and subejcted to an abusive "why didn't you see me .. :hissyfit: rant

come on guys,. it's tough enough out there on the roads and as usual the minoriry are not helping the image of cycling

Indeed. I post up your letter CZ of Solihull as it is more likely they lurk on 'ere from the :rotfl: "Troll Caves - aka the Dark Side .. aka ..

:yikes: "f-f -f for C-cyclists only forum .. full of lentilist wind  Unfortunately C Z of Solihull ..the arrogant and illegal type don't want police as we'll bang them to rights along with nowty drivers  It's why they delude themselves over evryone else being to blame for their own stupidity.

Not much different to anyone else then.. But post that cops will prosecute them and - um - into denial and claims that "no one understands them .. sob.... and everyone hates them .. sob :violin:

when:roll:

all one is pointing out is that the Road Traffic Act makes a number of requirements of all road users.. and we cannot ignore their transgressions and dangerous behaviour any more than someone with a motor beneath a bonnet.

Sorry, have to disagree.

Most the cyclists I see, unlit, wearing dark clothing and running red lights probably wouldn't read Cycling Weekly or any other cycling magazine for that matter. Only exception I could possibly make is London.

And I don't see how these cyclists are treated any differently to motorists who seem to get away with many similar offences.

At the end of the day, both groups are people and in many respects behave in the same way. (Lowest common denominator?)

Hi Ed

First .. let me say .. delighted at outcome for you.. truly. All the Swiss mob were very happy and cracked open some bubbly and drank a toast to you.

Tis a letter written to CW. I buy in rotation. IG buys CW each week and we get the monthly ones in a rotation. Large family and most of us live within reasonable commute range for visits and so on. He is only over the border along the A66 from us.. so we do see each other quite often. ( He is a nightmare as a passenger or riding partner though.. he notices :censored: everything.. it's like being on a -t t-t test.. as a police trainee :yikes: )

But that's the prob... these idiots do not read the cycling rags.. have not heard of John Franklin - let alone read his work  .. nor are they remotely interested in anything on the CTC wish list or even the petrolhead/pistonhead/Clarkson/ Paul Smith/safespeed contingent wish list. :banghead:

These dark clad .. ill-mannered uncouth louts in lycra undermine everything which all road users are campaigning for . which is the right to use all roads safely and without nit-picking menaces.. but all wanting the OTT idiots to receive real justice and assault on bank accounts in the way of fines and assault of liberty over the really OTT seriously and blatantly dangerous. :furious: :banghead:

I refuse to ride my bike in London.

Survived a ride in Paris :yikes: Felt safer as driver and cyclist in Paris than in London. If I have to visit London to deliver talk on my lurgy specialism .. I take train and use bus tube and taxi there.

I think it is a vile and vulgar city to be honest. I prefer Manchester, Leeds, York, Liverpool, Preston, Lancaster, Chester and even dear old Bolton to visit and explore and even shoppo in. Manchester, Liverpool and Chester do offer some decent theatre and opera and rock concerts 8-) .. and our Keswick Theatre By the Lake is just "EXCELLENT" in its productions .. we are season ticket holders .. and this theatre puts on some very fine interpretations of classics and moderns.

But back to topic..

I think if we highlight bad behaviour and suggest a good practice code.. we may get the aggrieved angry driver to at least stop and think about how to accommodate COAST values in his driving .. and accept that cyclists will behave in a certain way to stay alive too. We try to explain why primary position may be best survival policy and that it's not quite as one would be led to believe courtesy of a deranged muesli munching non cycling troll of much interner notoriety  I know you can read between the "spin" and "drifting off topic" lines Dan

Similarly by constantly posting about good practice and the dos and don'ts of cycling .. we may succeed in getting Paulie on a bike occasionally as in once per week and the rest two -three times per weeks and perhaps a leisure burst each day to build up to a seven day routine if commute is within a reasoned pedalo powered distance

You see .. you coerce gently .. and develop the enthusiams .. and you get perhaps a meet part of the way  by majority out there.

But Dan.. Ed Brain.. I guess I am talking about Joe Normal.

We have to work out how we deal with Chumpy Chav out there - and that is not quite so easy .. as Chumpy Chav will behave as an unteachable moron so how he goes about his business
