Sussex Police is giving away one-way screws to help motorists prevent number plate thefts
There were 438 recorded thefts of number plates across Sussex in 2006, with a further 94 so far this year. Criminals are thought to be using stolen number plates to avoid detection for motoring and other offences from the increasing use of camera technology.

15,000 'clutch head' screws, funded by Sussex Police, are being made available from police stations across Sussex on a 'first come, first served' basis. Motorists can also purchase such screws at garages and car spares stockists.

The special screws can be fitted using a standard screwdriver, but are much more difficult to remove than ordinary screws without breaking the plates.

Sussex will be just the tip of a very big iceberg! :(

I wonder what happens if you want a personalised number plate at a later date.

One way screws are not going to stop somebody gripping the screw head with a pair of mole grips.

Even if the people responsible do get caught off guard by a one way screw, it doesn't stop them from getting a duplicate plate made off the internet or from one of the many numerous street markets out there under the pretext of the plate being for "show use" only.

The government have brought "cloning" upon themselves, and it is only going to get worse.

I got a plate made up on a sunday market. Cash in hand no questions asked.

All you need to clone a number plate is a pencil and paper or a good memory. then trot off to your friendly market stall.

Until the embedded chip number plate is the only one you can fit:

Quote:
14. Restricting access to number plates had reduced vehicle crime. Number plate security could nevertheless be tightened further, and measures under consideration included embedding computer chips in number plates so that authorities could verify that the plates were genuine, and making number plates physically more difficult to remove. The theft of number plates was relatively uncommon. Each month, however, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency issued between 10 and 20 new replacement registration numbers where there was evidence that the details of a vehicle had been stolen to clone other vehicles. Under the Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001, which came into force in September 2003, all number plate suppliers in England and Wales must register with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and verify vehicle ownership records before issuing a number plate. The requirement to register had not yet been extended to Scotland and Northern Ireland, although action to do so was in hand.

hardly suprising, got a tug about a year ago for the front numberplate being in the windscreen. told the copper "I'd found it on the floor when I came out". Didn't tell him that was two years ago (or that my mates ms had knocked it off with the lawnmower cos I was parked on her lawn at the time). Anyway he told me to get it fixed and cleared off pretty sharpish at the suggestion of real criminal activity.

And so all you need to do is to walk through a car park with a hand scanner harvesting IDs

With a but of kit you can buy off e-bay you program up another RFID chip then away you go....cloned embedded plate.

Modern key-less car systems rely on a 2 way varification protocol. This can only be done where there is a limited number of matched transmitters and recievers (i.e one car and 2 tags) where communication is only one way in the case of RFID it is dead easy to clone as rolling codes cannot be used.

If they changed to RFID readers as the principal means of imposing, say, the congestion charge, then you could have one RFID identity and one visible (and different) identity. Very confusing.

:rotfl:

Yeah, that'd cause loads of trouble. They would have to have RFID verification stations with ANPR.
