Is it possible to send a text message from my computer to a mobile phone and is this free?
Apologies if this is a stupid question but if you don't know then you don't know eh? :)

Yes and no!

There's lots of free services out there, just search for "free SMS" or something like that. However when the message goes out it comes from the providers own number (and might have some advertising attached), so the recipient can't reply.

There are also providers that you buy a credit pack from and can then text directly from your PC using software they provide. You can set it to appear to come from your own mobile number. I use Esendex and clickatell.

Then of course you can connect your mobile to the PC and send through the mobile, but typed up on the PC. Nokias are really easy to do this with & Nokia supply free downloadable software.

Ah, this is interesting. I used to have an email to SMS gateway from Genie. I gave out an email address for my mobile and received short emails as text for free. This was running for a number of years until the Genie service stopped.

Is there a reliable and free email to SMS gateway anywhere these days?

I used to have a piece of software for my PC that allowed me to use my modem (remember those?) to dial directly into the network's SMS server and send SMS messages that way. It was particularly useful for me at the time since I was texting my girlfriend in Norway (very expensive) for only the cost of a UK mobile call for a couple of senconds to flash the text over. Sadly I cannot remember the name of the software, but Google is your friend.

This software also had other uses; it would allow you to bulk text, should you so desire, to a whole phonebook, or part thereof, and also set the sender ID to anything you liked, be is your own mobile number for reply, or a text name, like the marketing texts I am sure well all receive from time to time.

You can SMS (send and receive) on your PC using Tiscali Netphone.
Netphone is ideal if you want to use your PC to make calls to other netphone users (free), or send and receive messages (including faxes and voice messages).

However, you do need to sign up - which I think is free (I dont pay, but I get my phone and internet via Tiscali).

This is their blurb.....
Quote:
Make the most of your broadband connection to the world.

Netphone benefits

* Free calls over the internet to Netphone users
* Make landline calls from 1p
* No subscription or roaming charges
* Phone, fax and message service
* Get your own, free number
* Easy to set up and use

You can use Skype for outgoing SMS text.

Its cheap (Euro 0.080), but it aint free.

Using a modem seems a good idea, still have one of those for dial-up calls when away from home.
