Today's horrible crash on the A74 has taken the 2004 total fatalities above the 2003 figure.

CSCP began on 1/4/03 - 2003's figure for K's was also higher than the previous 2 years.

We really do have to question what this organisation has actually achieved in terms of casualty reduction - the figures speak for themselves.

Time for them to be closed down [/b]

Here's the fatals over time:

1991: 75
1992: 64
1993: 61
1994: 46
1995: 54
1996: 48
1997: 52
1998: 48
1999: 62
2000: 55
2001: 47
2002: 49
2003: 54
2004: 47 (to date, plus at least 2 for Dec)

As you can see nothing particularly amazing. One would expect that if speeds are being reduced at so-called blackspots (which must account for a large number of accidents) why no effect is being had where it is claimed that speed has the greatest impact.

Gareth, thanks for the figures - I only had 2000-2003 to work with from CSCP's site. (they showed 49 for 2001 and 53 for 2003).

For the record, December has been dreadful. 2 killed today on the A74, last week 1 pedestrian killed hit by vehicle on A595 near Millom, 2 weeks ago three killed on A5087 near Barrow, 1st week in Dec - 2 killed in separate crashes on A590. ie 8 so far this month - is this the worst for December do you know?

Figures from 2003 backwards to 1991: 2,3,6,4,8,4,1,2,7,4,5,8,12

So not the worst but the bad end of the worst.

edit: 29/12 - These figures are based on data I have here, they might not line up 100% with other data found elsewhere.

2004 final figures released today on the CSCP website (currently down, again!)

59 dead, 340 SI's. December final figure 12 dead (same as 1991).

So for fatals, apart from 1999 (62) the worst since 1993.

However on a KSI measure, 2004 is 10.5% better than 2003 (399 v 446). Although a larger year on year reduction in 1999-2000.

Just shows what a fantasy world the SCP's live in, they will claim 2004 as a triumph, a 10% reduction in KSI's.....

For the record, 2004 was the first full year of CSCP, the previous full year before the lurgy decended (2002) total fatals were 49.

Not a betting man, but I wouldnt offer odds on them still being in business by 1/1/2007

There are other measure afoot, this from todays release regarding the A590 High/Low Newton bypass:

Road casualties

The agency says the new bypass will significantly reduce accidents on the A590, which links the M6 motorway with Barrow and South Lakeland.

It estimates the new bypass could prevent eight fatal, 47 serious and 277 slight injury accidents over the next 30 years.

An agency spokesman said: "Although the new bypass goes through the Lake District National Park, the new road has the support of the Lake District National Park Authority and Cumbria County Council, because of its compelling need.

"It has been carefully planned to blend in with the surrounding countryside and extensive landscaping work will take place to minimise visual intrusion into the local landscape.

"The new bypass will bring considerable safety improvements as well as improving the quality of life for the villagers of High and Low Newton and Ayside by removing over 90% of traffic through the villages and reducing noise and pollution and will be a great relief to residents, who have campaigned hard for it."

The A590 currently carries up to 14,000 vehicles a day, including around 2,000 heavy goods vehicles.

Since January 2002, there have been 10 accidents in which two people died.
