I'm a mechanical designer but I seem to spend most of my time at the moment writing technical manuals and H&S / CE testing. I also love playing with 3D CAD which I use for producing illustrations for parts books.

It all sounds far more glamerous than it is...

Mechanical designer.
Started with British Aircraft Corp. working in the Structures D.O. on Concorde and then Tornado – MRCA as it was called then. (Those were the days!)
Now in an electronic instrumentation company where we design and manufacture a diverse range of products, from electronic ignition components for Triumph motorcycles to ultrasonic anemometers used by the Met. Office.

Jack of all trades..........

Currently (for nearly 20 years) working in the "cable TV" industry.

I deal with TV (analog and digital) reception and rebroadcast, Fiber networks, RF networks, Data networks. I am the hands everyone else uses to get their work done.

Not bad for someone who qualified as a Butcher (some say I still am when they see my work )

I'm computing support within a university department. I'm currently deciding whether to give up this well paid but now depressing job and move to the sticks and live a frugal life knitting tea bags or buy a maserati bi-turbo spyder and ride it out :)

Applications programmer having worked for local government (most of the tax money you pay gets wasted when they "reorganise" after another local election), a company that provided software to telco's, currently working notice at a consultancy firm after which I will be working for a major medical insurance company.

Not too shabby for someone who's first job was cutting insulation for pipes and walls.

recommend a decent cat 5 tester? Occasionally plop some network cables in for people, not enough to make it worth buying top end test kit but had a dicky cable the other day my fisher-price tester insisted was fine.

Two sorts of tester - one tests the correct wiring between ends -sort of DC test, not very expensive to buy - other does all sorts of tests , think it tests up to limits of cable and does a printout/ down load -as required by LA etc - from memory quite expensive . Thing to get right is to maintain twists in pairs as far as possible to termination point.

Electronics and embedded software engineer. 6 years with Invensys Building Systems in Slough developing HVAC controllers and associated widgets, then spent most of 2005 exploring the south-east on a succession of job-hunting journeys, before settling down at an analysis equipment company where I've been for the past year and a half. Better half started off driving minicabs around north London, then did a short stint at a Peugeot dealer/rental office, before getting her PCV licence 4 years ago and working her way up from the crappy boneshaker buses in Slough, via the Greenline Bracknell-Victoria coaches, to working the big red buses in Uxbridge (although she's now driving a desk, after discovering morning sickness and bus driving didn't really mix :D )

Electronics designer (mostly analogue) with exceptional skill - have a string of patents. It’s a sad fact that I was expert at turning on transistors before I knew I had to do so with women (that error has been corrected).
Some embedded; firm grasp of physics and maths (applied and stats).

Spent a decade designing sensors (safety critical), comms systems and interfaces (including Intrinsically Safe), usually for high volume manufacturing. Now do a lot of ‘blue sky’ work and instruct (and travel to) other R&D centres around the world (even been to NY).

Usually regarded as the trouble-shooter and all-round smart ass :D

It is interesting how many respondents here have technical/engineering jobs - don't know what that tells us, if anything.

Perhaps that our efforts can be counted on as being based upon fact and reasoned logic rather than knee-jerk reactions and emotively driven nonsensical demands?

True.. We think things through and then express an opinion  I think that's why the 'ology (my useless degree and me) idiots struggle and can only retort with petty and malicious abuse  I find it rather amusing really  And we WIN the argument by default on that basis.. but the idiots are really too thick to realise this :rotfl:

Word of advice.. read.. think and then reply maturely and without silly abuse. You never know .. we may get decent cycling facilities if you do.

Our lurking idiots forget that people who drive cars might ride a bike and WE ARE ALL TWO LEGGED BEINGS .. and we all .. er walk
