I've just read a small report in the latest Autocar mag, whereby it states that recent DfT figures conclude that the average speed travelled on motorways is..............70!

So, if speed limits are set to the 85th percentile rule does that not mean that the motorway speed limit is artificially low?? Stats for NSL single carriageways, BTW, indicate an average speed of 48, so a national 60 limits sounds there or thereabouts.

Just thought I'd throw that one open to the more eloquent members, but it seems to me that the motorway network (based on average speed travelled) could support a higher speed limit.

I'll leave the more eloquent members to make their own measured comments, but IMHO our NSLs of 60/70 mph are ridiculously low, and provide us with no useful guidance as to suitable speeds.

....and don't let us start fannying about with the added complexity of variable limits - which will still be wrong most of the time.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I'm afraid that our 'wonderful' Department for Transport got there first:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SafeSpeedPR/message/196

Rather than raise the limits to suit the reality, they have ALREADY changed to rules by which speed limits are set.
