Telford & Wrekin Council has won a top national award for its controversial work on the Queensway A442 eastern primary road.

The scheme involved drastic lane alterations and cutting the speed limit from 70mph to 60mph.

Many drivers complain it only encourages traffic to bunch and that they are constantly being cut up by motorists who have found themselves in the wrong lane.

But the scheme won the Institution of Highways and Transportation’s IHT/Atkins Road Safety Award in “reducing all accidents” category.

Judges praised the innovative measures, which include a dedicated lane system to separate traffic joining and leaving the Queensway, new signing and marking and publicity and education campaigns.

The council’s move followed statistics which showed that on the Queensway A442 there were 174 casualties in a 9km stretch of the road during the past five years.

This meant that five per cent of the borough’s road traffic casualties occurred on just two per cent of the road network.

The signs on the A442 have stated "174 casualties in 5 years" since - to my knowledge - 2001 :?

We are now in 2007, and the signs still say the same thing. Does that suggest that casualties have decreased in the last 5 years, because I cannot imagine that the council would keep the signs up if casualties had gone over the 174 mark????

I sent a FoI request in to the council about a week ago asking for accident stats on the 442. Should be interesting IF they respond.....

For several years there was a similar sign on the A171 at Scaling Dam. Presumably this was placed by Cleveland Constabulary or the Redcar and East Cleveland Borough Council. It's all a bit stupid really as the information on the signs can not possibly remain correct for long periods - even if it was ever correct.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Atkins Road Safety Award

Is that the same guy that came up with the Atkins Diet!......

Just a thought!

I think we should promote the "Paul Smith" safety award scheme for the most sensible safe road.

This bit makes me laugh.. 'cut up by motorists who have found themselves in the wrong lane' - yeah right, found themselves in the wrong lane my arse
Elected to undertake because the queue of traffic ahead was annoyingly adhering to the speed limit more like.
