Speed sign scheme for Bolton
By Deborah Linton

PORTABLE speed signs which warn drivers if they are breaking the limit to be introduced across Bolton.
Each of the borough's nine area forums has been given two of the signs - and residents will decide where they are sited..
The scheme, which will cost £55,000, is being funded by the government's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

A council spokesman said: "Area forums borough-wide will be implementing driver feedback signs funded by a Neighbourhood Renewal Fund initiative. "The scheme is aimed at giving area forums the opportunity to deal with communities' speed-related concerns. The way the scheme runs in the local area will be up to the forum."
The portable signs cost £4,000 each and flash the speed at which a vehicle is travelling as it passes. They will be moved around a number of different sites of concern within Bolton's various communities.
Westhoughton with Chew Moor Area Forum discussed which sites should take priority in the area tonight.
Local councillor Pat Allen was keen to see the scheme implemented in St John's Road, in Chew Moor, where residents have been fighting for road safety measures to slow down rat-run traffic.
Cllr Allen said: "The signs will be an enormous help because we need to prove that these people are speeding in order to get permanent measures installed.
"These signs cannot be ignored, I hope that they will shame people into taking more care on the road."

However, I gather village vigilantes are at it with regard to Chew Moor per my sisters.

With regard to the VAS signs, which is really what these are and my sister Ju-Ju comes across these on her commute to a school in the Altrincham area finds them very helpful and positive in making drivers "stand to attention", I am inclined to applaud and say "way to go" on this one. Not a waste of cash at all.

I think Pat Allen is against toll tax too. Unless my brother and two sisters in that area are mistaken

if they're the ones that flash up "slow down" then I agree. I came across a different sort the other night in a 30 zone.
"YOUR SPEED"
and below was 23... 24... 23... 24
then looking at my speedo thinking hmm, indicates 26ish
sign 23... 24...

hang on, aren't I supposed to be looking at the road if it's dangerous to be speeding here?

Generally I think they could be more effective than cameras in the right place. Though I do wonder how they are set up. I navigate in rally car with a sophisticated digital trip meter, and the driver has a palm type computer with GPS. And we passed one of these signs with everything switched on. Road side sign says 34 mph, speedo says 34 mph. Trip meter, set on a police measured mile and accurate to 2 decimal places says 29 mph and so does the GPS. Which is a bit naughty of the local council me thinks. If they are going to help with urban speeding problems they need to be set to reflect real speeds and not used to force us to pootle round at 25 mph.
