The M60 near Brinnington is the location of Britain's worst motorway junction as the northbound Bredbury sliproad joins the motorway here from the right hand side, yes you join the motorway in the fastlane!

Doubters should see for themselves on Google Maps.

I challenge anyone in this forum to find a worst junction.

M5 northbound onto M6. Zero visibility from L2 of the sliproad and only about 200 yards merging space.

Loads of them on here :o

I use M60 J25 anticlockwise every morning and in practice, although I agree it's crap, it isn't particularly dangerous as traffic on the slip road is easily able to get up to motorway speed.

IMV the various junctions with very short merges are worse, such as M6 J34 (Lancaster) and M50 J3.

That sounds easy, I'm talking about joining the motorway in the fastlane with three lanes up to speed.

I used to drive through stockport on the M60 every day in both directions and never recall an accident there... If the sliproad is long enough with good viz then the speed of the traffic already on the m/way shouldn't matter.

And besides, the slip BECOMES L3, so there's actually no 'merging' taking place until after the traffic has joined.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Mmm!

Well how about about the eastbound sliproad onto the M56 at Sharston?

Nope, you'll have to give me a clue on that one...

If you find it on flashearth you can link to it.

Agreed, I drive it every morning too and don't find too many problems - although slow moving streams headed by LGVs joining L3 can sometimes cause issues. I always find the clockwise section from J25 to Stockport viaduct/J1 far worse - esp trying to join at J27. Very steep uphill slip road, not too long and you're joining the main carriageway virtually blind until the last second. It's also a very busy section with narrower lanes than normal.

The whole south Manchester M60/M56/Princess Parkway/Mcr Airport motorway network is a nightmare. Despite having lived in the area for many years I still haven't worked out what connects to where and how.

The fact that the M56 splits into about 5 branches always confused me...

Always found the Sharston sliproad a bit tricky due to the amount of lorries on this stretch of motorway.

Where's Sotonsteve when you need him?

M27 & M271

Signal-controlled roundabout (though still a motorway officially)

Or just further up the road there's the M27 and M275 eastbound where L2 of the M27 suddenly vanishes.

I once came across this site on my virtual travels:

There's another one about a mile further west on the M8

M8 Charing Cross exit

However, as bad junctions go, the M8 isn't too bad, and I wouldn't say the ones seen already are the worst.

How about this one? This is where the M77 joins the M8. This is another on slip into L3, but you get the added bonus that most of the L3 joiners want to take the first exit about 600 yards further on. It's a bit hard to follow at first. Starting from the top you have M8 2 lanes, on slip from the M77 1 lane, barrier, hard shoulder, on slip from M77, 2nd on slip from M77 and finally 2 lanes of M8. :o

No problems with merge speed usually, but if you're already on the M8 you have to be really wary of someone coming over while you are in their blind spot.

The one that really makes me weep for all kinds of reasons is this one on the M58 at Skelmersdale:
