well that's it!

as from Friday just gone I am now unemployed as I can no longer have a fag at work except at break times, that's no good to me who needs a "Fix" every hour or so so I have packet it in, work that is

it will be interesting on Monday phoning the jobcentre to make a claim for unemployment benefit and when asked about criteria regarding a new job I state "must be a smoking workplace"

cheers labour you have just put me out of work after 39 fully Employed years service

Do you genuinely want to stop smoking but believe you are unable to do so, or is your motive one of defiance, and you have chosen smoke over work?

Well I don't support the smoking ban but even before it came in people in the vast majority of workplaces weren't allowed to smoke except at breaks, so I suspect you'll get zero sympathy from the DWP.

even though I am subjected to Torture by my own Government?

after all a smoker is as hooked on nicotine as a Heroin addict

the difference is they get every help and support and we get nothing!, just torture

If it's that much of a problem for you, why not use nicotine lozenges/gum/patches, at least when you can't have breaks?

That is not true - gosomokefree is a NHS funded support group. Stop smoking and nicotine replacement therapy has been available for at least 8 years

'No Smoking Day' was established in the early '80's and you will be able to find history showing that NHS help to stop smoking has been available for at least 30 years.

Well I hope you saved a few quid during those 39 years of service, because you won't be getting any benefits for six months as you will be deemed to have resigned of your own volition.

If i remember rightly, my dad got made redundant and couldn`t claim benefit because he had more than 3k in his bank account.

Surely this will apply to the fat tw@t called jp

You do realise you won't burst into flames if you never have another fag!
Just stop.
It's a little bit difficult for the first three weeks just like removing sugar from your tea.
Turn off your pc and exercise without ANY excuses for the first three weeks, morning and evening, be it swimming, walking or cycling etc and keep well away from temptation.
Distraction is the key.
It worked for me and all you have to do is apply yourself.
Don't count the days you have gone without either, just accept the fact you are no longer a smoker.
You also gain strength from feeling superior to those still smoking.
Oh! and if you think not being able to smoke at work is a pain in the arse then just wait till you start signing on.
And if you are a troll - get f****d as it's boring and not exactly original.

Hear hear - I went from 20-30 a day to zero in one go*. Give up, you won't regret it.

My only problem was my subconcious trying to get me to buy cigarettes, i.e. I'd be walking past a shop and my brain would go "check your pockets Johnny, you've run out of Embassys", and I would literally walk in to the shop on autopilot.

This only happened a couple of times in the first few days but it was bizarre.

*though I had a fag in the pub on Friday for the first time in nine years as I knew it would be my last opportunity. It tasted rank and made me dizzy!

I've been a week without a cigarette after religously puffing away for 20 odd years and yesterday my mate lit up in the car with his window open, the resultant smell as his cigarette was burning was awful.

When I gave up I found that my sense of smell and taste improved markedly. I hadn't really noticed that they had got worse in the first place. I can now smell a crafty ciggy from miles off, and realise that there must have been times that I thought I was undetectable but wasn't. :( TBH that was about the only thing I did notice when I stopped (no great fitness improvement or anything like that, alas).

Paul, as an ardent smoker (still, AFAIK), what are your views on the smoking ban? I can very much see both sides of the argument myself, but on balance I am just in favour (for selfish reasons really, as it means my clothes don't reek after an hour in the pub). I'm not in favour of councils enforcing it though, as it'll just be used as another cash cow. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out in England; methinks there'll be more controversy than there was elsewhere....

Obviously you all know I am strongly opposed to the ban (see today's sig.), but I don't see it being a cash cow for councils - in general I think it will be largely self-enforcing in pubs and bars and the opportunities to issue fines will be very limited. In Scotland, as I have mentioned before, more people have been fined for smoking in vehicles than smoking in bars, and neither figure is very large (tens of each, IIRC).

JP,

Looking through all the posts in this thread, I see that no-one is in support for the way you have responded; this view will be reflected by any prospective employers.

Given your criteria for a new job, coupled with another post with a racial overtone, I find hope in the fact that it is unlikely you’ll find a means to continue to afford your internet connection.

Peter,

Do you know typical circumstances for people getting fined for smoking in vehicles? This seems strange at first glance. Who reports them?

I don't know how it actually happens, all I can find from a quick Google is this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tay ... 294712.stm

I would hope the police aren't wasting their time on this.
