I don't know what Merc have - and I'd be interested to find out - But air con is ALWAYS high power.
I do that already. It's very cheap and easy these days. But the lowest power useful air con is about 800W, so that's about 70A at 12V - I'd be using all my 'practical' battery power in 3 hours.
yeah, it's a fair old load alright, would probably want an 800AH battery or paired up batterys or something. something like ebay might turn up mis-ordered or overstock items at a nice price, as the battery dimensions are largely irrelevant.
Huge battery banks are, well, huge! And space is very much at a premium. There's also the issue of what you have to do to recharge such a large battery bank. You could recharge it at about 200A - but how much does a 200A intelligent battery charger cost? And then you find you need to give the battery charger 2.5Kw, which means a bigger generator or a much longer charge time.
The real answer to all this is a low noise on board generator. They are common in American 'RVs' - and I think it's the need for air con that drives the need - but they
start at about £3,000 and they are quite bulky (Nevertheless if I could afford one, I would find space for it).
