The following Safe Speed PR was issued at 06:56 this morning:

Quote:
PR526: Leading road safety campaigner vows to 'battle on' after heart attack

news: for immediate release

In the early hours of Tuesday 7th August 2007, Paul Smith, 52, founder of the
Safe Speed road safety campaign suffered a heart attack. After initial
treatment at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness he was transferred to Aberdeen
Royal Infirmary where his recovery continues. He is likely to remain in
hospital until Tuesday 14th August.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Paul Smith, founder of SafeSpeed.org.uk, said:
"Obviously I will take a necessary pause for the sake of my health, but I vow
to battle on against bad road safety policy founded on speed cameras. My own
heart attack is a stark reminder about the importance of doing everything we
reasonably can to preserve life."

"I'm delighted with my recovery so far and feel very well. I wish I could say
the same about British road safety policy."

"We haven't seen the road safety improvements that we are entitled to since the
introduction of speed cameras and I know why - it's because the priorities are
all wrong. Unimportant things are receiving great attention while important
things are neglected. The important things that we are neglecting include
management of driver quality and effective roads policing."

<ends>

The folks in the Clubhouse have known about this since Tuesday. I'm sorry that the folk in the wider public forums haven't been informed until now.

When I tried to call you, and your partner, Clair, told me the news, it was considered best to initially limit it to the Clubhouse, in case it was inapropriate to broadcast it to a wider audience until you were recovering.

Pleased to see you are now making a full recovery and I appologise if was not appropriate to make the initial posting in the Clubhouse.

No, no, thanks Geoff. It was absolutely right to make the initial announcement in the Clubhouse. But I think I was a bit on the late side telling the wider forums.

Many thanks for your considerable help over the last week.

SS! My God! At 52, I'm the same age as you! So your news came as a shock.

Take care. I recommend cycling as good cardiovascular exercise!

Get well soon, Paul - I realise the campaign is important to you, but try to take it easy for a bit?

In the Clubhouse we've been discussing how to ensure this; banning Paul from the forum was mentioned....

We discussed the issue of people taking the load off Paul. One thing pointed out is that any spokesperson of SS needs to be able to reply to any argumet thier case instantly. People need to be trained up and gened up.

I have bad short term memory problems linked to my dyslexia and I do what I can. But one way is to get involved with phone in shows when ever speed cameras are mentioned, Phone in and argue our case. Good radio experiance can be gained by joining your local hospital radio. Watching Paul, he can construct a PR in minites. You can improve your skills by replying to letters in your local rag and on thier forums. Also write letters to your MP's and send freedom of information requests.
we shouldt just moan on here, we should follow up some of those moans with a letter. How many good ideas on this board have not been followed up?

If you dont use those skills they won't improve.

Wildy and self said most of how we feel in the Club House along with some general advice to Paul. I suggest looking at IG's "CW Wonder Foods" thread as well. Lot of good diet/exercise ideas courtesy of the cycling rags posted up there

have to laugh - IG reads his mags and various members of the family get a phone call requesting permission to post up family recipes

We certainly post in public our best wishes for a safe speedy recovery

But as said in the private "lounge" - take it easy mate - and learn to relax a bit. Gentle exercise can help as varied diet rich in fish/fibre/fruit & veg.

Just said it in the "Members". I rei-iterate hjere that I wish Paull all the best.

I have given a few decent recipes in the cycling forum which I loosely base on the suff I read in the cycling rags

I have asked Mad Doc to make some key advice in public too as I think his post in private was very useful advice.

However, I will state very publicly that I wish nothing more than a speedy recovery and wil say what I said in private .. in public.

That I think Paul should take stock.. take a rest for a month or more and take up the mantle of his cause refreshed and rejuvenated
