Hi,

Just after some advice if poss. I was travelling through calne (wiltshire) today and leaving the town on the A4 heading towards chippenham you come from a 30 into a 40 zone.

I was on the edge of leaving the 30 and parked in what only looked like someone's drive on the bend, can't really remember as I only noticed it at the last mo when I went past was what appeared to be a police traffic bike with a tripod infront and some sort of laser I guess. The policeman was standing away from the equipment and not looking at me as I went past. As I was approaching the 40 I reckon I was was probably around 35 on the speedo. Is it possible he was purely checking passing speeds?. It did not look particulary big etc.. would it have video etc?.

Maybe someone local knows if this used for issuing tickets or purely observation?. If I get a ticket I get a ticket but just not seen this before as always used to seeing camera vans. The bike did not have the speed cam logos etc.

thanks for your time
H

You'll be fine.

1) Indicated 35mph is probably an actual 31mph or 32mph; not enough in practice for a prosecution.

2) Real police (as opposed to "safety" camera partnerships) tend to stop you at the time if they're going to give you a ticket, as the whole thing is not about maximising profits in their case.

Relax. :)

hey thanks for getting back so quick, the thing that stuck out most to me was the fact it was a real policeman rather than the safety cam bunch..

I am a worrier! :), Even so the next 14 days will seem like a long time just in case...

Try not to worry.

He may have been doing an audit based on residents' complaints if he was in someone's driveway. We are not allowed to trespass  (Or at least - not anywhere I've worked )

It may well be he did not judge your speed to be over and thus never bothered to ping you.

It may well be that your speedo read 35 mph and in reality you were below threshold.

Lot of officers do allow a fair-ish margin too and most of us out there apply common sense reasoning.
