Hear, hear.

That's an interesting observation. I think the safe use of the roads depends on individuals taking responsibility for their own safety as well as the responsibility for safety of those around them.

Any group blaming others clearly isn't taking responsibility for their own safety. That's going to cause problems and is a risky (and rather stupid) mindset.

I think to some extent this perception stems from differing views on transport policy more than differing views on mutual responsibility on the road.

Some of the people who are active on cycling forums are those who would like to see significantly less use made of private motor transport, and this may colour their views on safety-related issues - indeed they might argue that the two cannot be divorced.

There was a thread on this a couple of months ago entitled Safety vs Ideology.

Personally I tend to feel setting one group of road-users against another is going to be counter-productive in terms of both safety and overall transport policy.

Did this turn into a philosphy forum when I wasn't looking? :)

Is this a derivative of the one about the tree falling in the forest when there's no one there to hear it?

Or possibly "I think, therefore I am going to break the speed limit if it's safe to do so".

But do you really break the speed limit if there is no camera there to see it?

Well, the camera doesn't think so...

And of course since you have to be able to think to drive the classic proposition: "cameras make money" is proven.

And to combine the religious and philosophical content of this thread:

There once was a man who said "God
must think it exceedingly odd
if he finds that this tree continues to be
when there's no-one about in the quad".

And the response:

"Dear Sir, your astonishment's odd;
I am always about in the quad
And that's why the tree will continue to be
Since observed by, yours faithfully, God."
