The IAM has started using their website for regular monthly surveys on road safety related topics, and here is this months:

'Should the Government introduce a no alcohol ban for drivers under 26?'

Whatever good do they think this emotive bit of nonsense will achieve? Is this really the best they can come up with?

Equally tragic when they state:

Quote:
The purpose of the Survey (is) to raise the profile of the IAM in the eyes of IAM Members, the Public, and other organisations which influence Road Safety.

Well, they certainly haven’t impressed this IAM Member.

A 'no alcohol' ban?

Let's just go back to droning on about pull-push steering, shall we?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Does it really say that? <boggle>

A ban on no alcohol?

Double negative.

Well first of all, the double negative in the question really grates my linguistic ear.

But in all seriousness, I do think there is a serious problem with the attitudes of some young drivers. I do not think this problem is particularly caused by drinking small amounts of alcohol, so I don't see what good it would do. For me the worst ones are the '30 in a narrow street in first gear, with foot to the floor' type. They are not in proper control, and the noise and massive acceleration/braking is very intimidating. I doubt alcohol is a factor, and when it is, it probably isn't small amounts. These aren't the types of people who would drink a half anyway.

edit: I wasn't the only pedant to notice the double negative then? :)

Yeah - that's the exact wording. It's a misleading survey in more ways than one!

Well - youth is wasted on the young, as they say.

It isn't the alchol so much as the sheer testosterone and inexperience IMHO.

Perhaps we should cut their nads off and put them all on another island together where they can crash into each other and we'll have whoever's alive back when they are 30 years old.

Ah.. If only I ruled the world... :)

Next problem please? :hehe:

Grammatical errors aside, does anyone know why 26 is the cut-off age?

Presumably because in this target driven age someone, somewhere has blindly decreed that 25 is too young and 27 is too old!

Really, hasn't this obsessive reliance on strict numerical values done enough damage already? There are some times when an exact figure is justified and some when a certain amount of tolerance would make more sense. Sadly, some people only seem to work in absolutes.
