More a580 news -

Friday 12th there was a fairly large smash near Kirkby. Large enough to need the entire eastbound to be closed from Kirkby to Blindfoot Road roundabout. Police were out in force, not collecting money but doing a job clearing up something caused by a driver[1].

Fellow (A580) East Lancs Road users beware.......... They're collecting for the Christmas Policemans Ball rather early this year it seems!

Police, beware, drivers are doing silly things on the roads all the time

it's entirely relevant ... relevant to your "police bashing" post. It almost seems that you believe the Police have no reason to be on the road whatsoever, apart from "taxing stupid people"?

Handy, calm down......

I was asking about the Facts of the crash of which you spoke. You mentioned "drivers"........of what? A car/cars? Trucks?

And I don't think that I was Police bashing, surely Police cars NOT on an emergency are expected to obey the speed limit just like me? After all I would be justifiably miffed if he had turned around and booked ME for speeding wouldn't I........

Seems the locals are backing. But A580 at rush hour? Average speed from Greyhound roundabout to Manchester is about 15/20 mph anyway.

Off peak and at night .. sisters down there say cars travel at the current 60 mph and these incidents are not happening each day all the same. In fact they have pals who recall when it was 50 mph and even 40 mph at one point. Apparently it was upped in the late 70s.

That article reads like a bad joke.

Motorcyclist being chased by cops at 120 mph in a 60 mph limit kills pedestrian. Parents of victim welcome speed limit drop to 50 mph as "a step in the right direction".

Um, what? If the limit had been 50, would the biker have suddenly changed his mind and pulled over?!? In what possible way would a lower speed limit have stopped a criminal on the run?

Mrs Evans then says "Drivers on that road don't keep to the limit, they do well over 60 mph". And then calls for the limit to be dropped to 50.
Well dear, if they're not obeying the current 60 limit, why do you think they would obey a 50 limit?

AIUI the current 50 mph section through Swinton was originally a 40 but the 60 section to the west was originally NSL. It was reduced to 60 as far as Astley many years ago and it is this section that they are now proposing to reduce to 50. The former NSL section to the west which was reduced to 60 earlier this year will stay at 60.

All of the section from Swinton to Astley seems fine for 60 to me.

Confused? You will be!

Knee jerk. I think safe enough having visited the in-laws in this area. They say a right crawl in rush hour.

Incidents happen .. but not so often. It like the M60/M61/ These are not frequent und usually result of something "untowardly not normal"

I not feel greatest compassion as I normally do. It more regret/pity/sadness at pointless death.. but not moved to light candles as norm. This does not mean I do not remember in part of personal silent prayer. I do. I just do not light a candle as I would for most others. Lauren: I did light candle for her .Bulmer sweet cider? She was innocent . did not realise it may have caused her to misjudge a bit. No one charged here. This suggest legal behaviour .. but a bad call iof judgement. By the way.. this had HUGE STREET LIGHTING .. but 60 mph road .. lights on green.. sparse traffic .. I think Lauren perhaps very tragically misjudged the speed of approach. und the drivers tragically never thought she'd step off.

But .. how many times can one honestly say they not placed foot forwarsds und aborted idea after second life =saver glance.. which some teenagers by virtue of youth sometimes forget to do. :scratchchin:

I was going to say: "Most"..... But I have to say: "All" of the accidents and incidents that I personally have seen on the A580 have been at road junctions and roundabouts.
People DO approach roundabouts far too quickly, expecting to have "instant access" when they get there, and the people waiting to enter therefore have little chance....requiring something of a GP starting technique in order to join the roundabout!

"I" personally wouldn't be averse to the imposition of speed limits (with cameras if necessary) when approaching junctions and roundabouts, if the rest of the road itself were to be returned to the 70 mph, which was NEVER the real problem anyway.

Even "Traffic Cars" not on a shout at 75 mph......doesn't worry me. The hypocracy though, does.....

Has anyone noticed? I drove from the M6 eastwards last week and it's got "new signs"; NSL (70MPH)!........(must be the only stretch left!) until you reach a point 400yds...ish before the Golborne Island where Park Lane joins.. then it goes to 60? Nice spot for an ambush is that.

Looks like a future "set up" to me....

Watch out folks! :)
