:yikes:

Not seen this on here so far  But the tabloids exposed yesterday. But it seems a Zebra Crossing costs £114K to construct.

Tory MP Oliver Letwin made some enquiries into Highways Agency expenditure and was a bit cross over the cost of "crossing the roads".

Labour to paint the stripes costs £87K. :? :? It takes two weeks to paint the stripes? Drop the kerb .. erect a couple of Belishas :? :?

Blimey.. I could treat a dozen patients on top cost drug for this cash alone. :banghead: Plus me own wages and some more nurses and junior medics :banghead:

£16K on equipement. and £11K to design what is, after all, a pretty standard design of dropped kerb, paint, zig-zag marks in the area designated for this work. Even with some audit work for best place to construct the crossing. - it's almost beyong comprehension that a bit of tweaking on a computerised graphics/engineering programme costs so much cash even from scratch design.

The Highways Agency claimed this cost was based on fully signalled crossings with refuge and not a zebra crossing.. Only Letwin apparently did his homework and found this to be standard costs per the Sexpress account of this story  :? :? :?

I can't see how people aren't taking backhanders if that's really the case!

You are forgetting about all the administrative costs incurred to ensure the whole thing is legally constituted to prevent smartarses like us picking it apart if there is an accident. :)

Of course it's the politicians' own fault for making laws and the legal process so complex.

I seem to remember a recent complaint that 5 road signs cost £1300 due to all the standards that had to be met for the signs and their installation.

Great idea by the way, a zebra crossing across a trunk road.

Winterbourne Abbas is bad enough already, and has a perfectlt adequate pelican crossing to boot.

When I campaigend for a PELICN crossing in Windermere a couple of years ago, the cost in Cumbia was a mere £48,000!!

Cumbria County Council recently put a Chicane in place at Ulverston - cost £12,000 and when locals protested it was not necessary it cost £1100 to take away!!

I anticipate it is something like £14,000, or less, to install a crossing.

But £100,000, or more, for the consultation, planning, consultant's feasibility study, reaseach and design, and approval, etc.
