New penalties to hit 1m drivers

MORE than a million motorists would be just one speeding offence away from being banned from driving under a new penalty system being considering by ministers.

The government may double the points penalty for breaking the speed limit by a large margin - making a six-month driving ban more likely for those who, for instance, do 45mph in a 30mph zone.

Paul Smith, founder of campaign group Safe Speed, said: "Drivers will be concerned they will face losing their licences after two cases of driving safely - exceeding the speed limit isn't automatically dangerous."
