I hope everyone here just saw 30 Minutes on Channel 4 just now. It covered all the ridiculous new laws that the Government are bringing in, such as one guy who was almost jailed for not having an Ajax bottle in a locked cabinet, as well as pointing out the sheer ridiculousness of speed cameras.

They also drove along at the exact speed limit and showed how much it infuriated other drivers having to go at 30mph on a clear road, followed by their risk taking overtaking manouvres to get past.

Not one member of Government accepted an invitation to be interviewed! It just goes to show that even they don't believe in their own petty laws.

Had my second RoSPA lesson today and spent the rest of the day practising and been on my best behavour. I've observered all the speed limits with no problems at all. That guy that got banned had 2 other minor traffic offences too did he not, and they were? We weren't told...

No. His points had built up from the same camera over a very short amount of time.

Sorry but dangerous overtaking & bad driving in general is not the fault of any other vehicle.
I recently had some mental retard overtake me using the pavement due to the narrowness of the road, was that my fault for driving at a safe speed for the road ?.
Sure people who travel too slow for the road & conditions cause others, trying to make progress, overtake & in some conditions this may cause frustration, but that is no excuse for danger driving.
The police in the Kings Lynn area of Norfolk did, a few years ago, start stopping people who were driving too slowly for the conditions, you should have heard the complaints, so that one stopped.

May be so but more and more I get stuck behind someone who is doing 29 in a 40 or 50 limit because the see speed camera signs and don't know what the speed limit is so the play it "safe"....

Or as happened recently I was following a guy was doing 50 in a 50 limit, he just passed a camera and slammed the brakes on just before he got to the white because he obviously didn't know the speed limit at that moment in time.. :?

Yes, but my point was that these silly speed limits do infuriate people and push them to make such overtaking manouvres that they might not otherwise make. The point is not that crazy overtaking is ok, but that the speed limits make people lose their rag and become more dangerous as a result.

The other day I was following someone who braked to 35 for a camera in a 50 limit that used to be (and should be) a 70

Try going up the A9 without overtaking anyone-main problem is trucks as road is mainly single lane with some overtaking 'areas'.

I've found some of the best overtaking opportunities are in front of the gatsos on this road. The HGVs slow to 40 or less to pass the camera on the other side of the road giving those of us on 2 wheels plenty of opportunity to pass everything quickly and safely on what is usually a perfectly straight bit of road with no junctions to worry about.

Do they still have the 'Frustration causes accidents, please allow overtaking' signs or have they been removed in a bout of political correctness!?

Not been up the A9 for a few years, nice drive though in '98/99!

In that case, it's still almost 75% of the absolute maximum speed. You have nothing to complain about.

Yes! And also countdowns to Dual Carriageways "Dual Carriageway 2 miles" so that drivers know that overtaking opportunities are not too far ahead.

Retake your driving test and try it. A tenner says they'd fail you for it if it was perfectly safe to do 40.

I can confirm that Gatsobait, I failed my original test for going 30 in a 40mph zone.

The highway code is quite explicit on the subject:

Section number 145: Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass.

What's wrong with a bit of common sense and consideration for other road users?
