Hello. Can anyone offer me any advice on this?

I had, until a short while ago, an 18 year old micra (a second car to use as a runabout). The tax and MOT both expired at the end of October. On 7th November, I took it in for MOT and it failed terminally. I then brought it home and parked it outside my house (I do not have any off-road parking). On 24th November the car was removed by a breaker who subsequently scrapped it, however on 22nd November it got a ticket for not displaying a valid tax disc (the old one was still on display). So I gritted my teeth and paid the £60 fine assuming that that would be the end of it. A few days ago, however, I received a letter from DVLA asking me to inform them whether I was the keeper on 22nd November (the date of the offence). I rang DVLA and queried this. They told me it was likely that I would receive a penalty for this, based on the amount of time the car was untaxed for, which would be around £45 (despite my already having paid the FPN).

So.......
My only "crime" as far as I see it was to take longer than I should have done to arrange the car's removal (roughly three weeks). This I accept and am prepared to accept **reasonable and justified** consequences for this.

My question is: Is it right that I should be fined twice (once by Police, once by DVLA) for the same offence? Note that it was insured all this time as I didn't cancel the policy until it was safely on the back of the tow truck. I'm struggling to think of any other scenario where one is expected to pay twice for the same thing.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

Its my understanding that one is a fine the other is back tax as you hadn`t SORN and were keeping an unlicenced car on the highway

Fuel tax + VAT on top.
Sorry, that doesn't help...

Someone on another forum I frequent was fined 3 times.

For failing to display, failing to renew, and for driving untaxed.

And from what I recall of that case you've got off lightly so far.

So, three crimes solved then.
