iT'S ALMOST 2008.

At this time, I'm certain Paul would not have wanted us to get morbid over his departure, but would have wanted us to go forward into the new year preaching the gospel of road safety .

So can I wish each and every one of you a safe and healthy New Year - hoping that Paul's gospel will impinge on more people and that day by day people will start to see the futility of road safety by numbers.

Paul's epitaph should read - "Safety cannot be measured in numbers ,unless the numbers are on the side of road safety "

Happy New year everyone. :drink: Nice fireworks in London, seems about the only thing they've got right.

Happy New Year from Cumbria - wet but happy having just let off a shed load of fireworks at a local Hotel.

However I have at least 8 big display fireworks which failed to go off due to the crap fuses getting damp!
Any ideas on what to do with them - if I take any more apart and store the contents I will have to apply for a black powder license!
I'll check, but I don't think our re-cycling centre has a skip for dud fireworks!

Mind you I think I can re-fuse them by November 5th!

The fireworks were pretty impressive, however, I was concerned over the unnecessary CO2 emissions. Still it was for people's enjoyment wasn't it?

Hang on, that's why I have a 6 litre sportscar - my enjoyment - so it must be OK then.

Political I'd say. We’ve got to try and beat the world at something, and at a cost of 1.3M (I read somewhere) but, it was nice of them to give us some enjoyment, even if it did only last nearly 15mins.

Do you think it was the start of the build up to the 2012 Olympics (demonstrating that we can, at least, set light to things properly)?

Wasn't the display organised by a Frenchman and paid for by Ken Livingstone (i.e. London ratepayers)?

They hired French pyrotechnics expert Christophe Berthonneau, I'm not sure but I beleive the cost is split between sponsors, and councils.

When I were a wee lad, I used fireworks to sink my airfix models that went wrong. I would launch them down the ford and...KABOOOM!

HAPPY NEW YEAR :drink:

CO2? I was in the thick of clouds of stuff, and CO2 would at a guess be the least of your problems.

Various chemicals are used to colour the fireworks, and a few contain mercury compounds (as does some firearm ammunition!). :o

Judging by the crowds we attracted on Bowness promenade despite the weather, fireworks are still very popular!
