I work from home and business is starting to pick up - a times I'll have several clients laptops stored at the premises for a few days. Until now I've made do with home insurance as I've only recently started letting clients leave goods here for repair/building.

Does anyone know of any good & cheap home-office insurance. All the big home insurers have "you do not run a business from the property" clauses. And I don't want business insurance as it won't cover my personal items- I'd like to not have to get both as that'll be expensive.

My house insurance is with the AA. I rang them last week to say I run a business from home & could they change the policy. If I remember correctly they said the limit for business equipment was in the region of 7K. There was no increase in premium!

Excellent, hadn't looked with them. Had looked at Norwich and More Than and used Confused but nothing useful coming up so thank you very much :)

Damn, I thought this thread was going to be about liability insurance after getting sued for losing personal data. :)

My home contents and car are insured with NFU Mutual. I don't shop around anymore and doubt they are the cheapest, they don't claim to be. but there appears to be plenty of cover. They are used to busnesses being run from home.

They don't have call centers either. You ring the office, then they ring you back with the quote.

I had an incendent with the lap top in the summer. I thought the storm had passed, it had not. I got the quote for the replacement and the cheque came through no problems.

They don't like motorbikes though.

You got a website or phone number for them?

The AA won't insure me because they don't do businesses in Computer Services :x

Just make sure it covers customer's property being stored temporarily.

Also get a good steel filing cabinet and lock the laptops in there when you are out, or a safe if you have room or can find one which is big enough at a decent price.
