An electric car v Porsche and a Ferrari.

I must admit I was intrigued by the results of the races between the vehicles. :)

Clearly, there's a long way to go but electric vehicles might have their part to play. Eventually.

An electric motor will produce peak torque when stalled - as a result they have phenomenal pulling power off the line (much like a steam engine)! I'm told by someone who used to race them, that radio controlled electric cars were quicker off the mark and round tight cisrcuits than the glow-plug engined ones too. We've been experimenting with electric drive and with a 40kW electric motor we can just leave the gear lever in third all the time. Top speed isn't that good but we don't really need the gearbox any more.

The problem with all battery-electric cars is that they aren't "zero carbon" so I'm not sure there's much point other than for localised (town centre) emissions reduction and for using "waste" capacity from the National Grid at night. A step in the right direction, certainly, but not the final solution IMO.

I know which one I would prefer on my drive. And it is not one that plugs in.

Always the big downer is the cost and capacity of the battery. Not to mention the life. Most deep dischange traction batteries are only good for about 300 recharge cycles....a bit of a bummer when they are about ten grand a set.

The solution is not and will never be battery powered cars. If you want to use electricity get a fuell cell.

It's an Ariel Atom with batteries!

All Simon Saunders does is fast. He knows nothing else.

If Ariel made a kettle, it would do zero degrees Kelvin to boiling point in 2.5 seconds!
