Those aren't reasons, they're criteria.

Most of the road between Buxton and Ashbourne is dead straight as far as the eye can see. If ever there was a road that deserved a NSL limit, this is it.

Of course we aren't competent to drive at a speed appropriate to the conditions, so - like children - we must be told how fast we should go.

When will these people learn that the safe drivers are those who drive at a speed appropriate to the conditions, whilst maintaining a good awareness of what is going on around them. They are not the drivers that devote 50% of their attention to what the speedo is reading, so that they can stick exactly to the speed limit - even if this speed is inappropriately fast - whilst remaining largely oblivious to potential hazards. (Like my sister in law.)

Here's a typical view on the A515 taken earlier today, showing just what a twisty, dangerous road it is:

This killer road now has a 50 limit:

Whereas NSL is applied to the higher-quality roads turning off it:

Are you saying you'd have to devot 50% of your observation time to your speedo to ensure you don't go faster than the speed limit?

Put very simply, in the case of the A515, yes.

The picture Peter E has put up isn't the one short straight bit, it has several long straight sections that are puctuated with a few bends - none of which could be described as needing special attention.

So yes driving along the A515 when it's quiet will require paying more attention to the speedo. That is if we don't all slip into a coma with the boredom of 31 rural miles of totally needless 50mph. I've been driving that road regularly for 20+ years and even my modest jalopy can easily maintain a drama free 60 mph along it.

Over the years I've driven on single-carriageway A-roads from Cornwall to Northern Scotland. I can confidently say that the A515 between Buxton and Sudbury is in the top 10% of being well-aligned and suited to high speeds. Reducing this road to 50 mph is utterly ludicrous. I fail to comprehend what can have been going through the minds of Derbyshire CC in imposing this restriction. I did write a (very polite) letter of objection, but they never bothered replying... :x

Weepej, from what you know, do you agree with the reduction?

Are there any stretches of current single-carriageway NSL where you would object if they reduced them to 50mph? Would you still think it unsafe to proceed at 60mph after such a reduction, even if you had thought it safe before?
