Hi all

New to this forum but I thought I would share a recent experience I had here in wonderfull brunstrom land.

First of all let me state that I agree with keeping to the speed limits whenever possible but it's a pity the police dont pursue other incidents with the same zeal they do the speeding motorist.

A week or so ago I was hit in the rear by another car at a roundabout, I got out to see if the other occupants were ok, but all I was greeted with were threats and abuse, I even had to avoid the guy taking a swing at me.

My wife having seen this called the police but in the meatime a traffic car passed the scene of the rta, called at the garage opposite and started fueling his car. I went over to him to have a word and he didnt give a monkeys, told me it happens all the time just exchange details and carry on was his advice, I told him my wife was not feeling too good, he said he would call an ambulance but he never did, in fact he never even checked on my wife at all.

It seems you can drive without due care and attention, injure someone in the process, make threats of violence and there are no consequnces, but exceed the speed limit and you will be nicked. However the story doesnt end there as on the way home my wife started to feel really unwell so I decided to take her to hospital myself and guess what?

This weekend I got a NIP from the police saying I was caught doing 36mph in a 30mph zone, it was straight after the accident and on the way to hospital, oh the irony, they dont deal with the initial incident and no doubt will want 60 quid off me in the bargin. Of course I could hand over my fine and take my 3 points just like any other citizen but its feels like rough justice.

Do you think I would be wise to take the 3 points or argue my case in court? I have had a clean licence since I got it in 1982

John

Your tale of woe does not surprise me in the slightest John, but it's not just Brunstroms lot that are inept.....the imbecile's in Hampshire are just the same.

Last year the wifes car was damaged on our driveway by one of the kids from our street. She went to speak to the mother (20 Mayfair, White Lightning & Jeremy Kyle material) and was met with a torrent of abuse.
The wife told me what happened when I got home, so I went over to have a word.

I was greeted with the same neanderthal response, only this was followed up an hour or so later with the eldest (and his mates of course) standing outside our house waving bits of fence post around (removed from our fence) shouting out general abuse and threats.

By this time I've had a few voddy's inside me, so I'm more than up for sorting out the mouthy little twats. The wife however stopped me and insisted I call the police.

Ha...what a waste of time that was.....

Once the operator had decided that nothing had actually happened at that point (obviously criminal damage & threats of violence are no longer illegal), I was told that nobody could attend as they were "a bit thin on the ground and nothing had really happened" and that they would try to get someone around within 24 hours.

I kinda flipped at this point and said "tell ya what mate, don't bother sending anybody around at all, but can you send an ambulance in 10 minutes for the little ba$tards outside because they are going to need it you f**king useless shower of good for nothing c**ts".....with that, I slammed the phone down.

Well blow me down with a feather, in under 5 minutes there were no less than 3 (riot equipped) vans outside my front door (not bad going considering they didn't have anybody available).

The problem was duly calmed down and off they went.
Monday morning was a whole different ball game though, at 7am the doorbell is having the life rung out of it. I answer the door to no less than 6 of the schmucks and am told I'm being arrested.
When I ask what the charge is, I am told............

Wait for it.......

Misuse of Telecommunications

Yup, because I swore on the phone they decided I needed to be picked up by 6 of Hampshire's finest and held for the entire day at Alton police station.

I eventually ended up in court for the Misuse of Telecommunications and got the following sentence:
4 months imprisonment (suspended for 18 months)
18 months supervision order (probation)
£320 fine
And the best bit....ordered to successfully complete an anger management course

Anyway, I have digressed.......

If I were you I would want my day in court, but I suspect it will be a lot cheaper to just take it up the jacksey and pay the £60 and cop the points (especially if you are having thoughts about telling the court how inept the old bill really are).

Hallo und :welcome:

It pity you did not take reg/police number from that policeman who refused to help when person not exchanging details but being violent (which two crimes.. fail to report/breaching the peace.)

Did your wife have whiplash from the rear end hit? Bruising? Alas .. it not class a life threatening. It only after newspaper outcry that they cancel NIP for expectant Papa taking expectant Mama in labour to hospital. Baby born on arrival.

I would make complaint still about the attitude. If the other party fail to report this incident to insurers..I would be inclined to phone up the local papers .. to show up how lax they are on crime there.

I live in hope that the police will return to their intended purpose, sooner or later.
But:

Late at night.
Layby.
Driving a van after delivering.
Tired.
Sleeping.
Woken-up.

Police:
"hello sir, would you mind telling me what you're doing here"

Me:
"sleeping"

Police:
"why here"

Me:
"I was tired"

Police:
"we're aware what goes-on here sir"

Me: (mystified)
"what"

Police:
"men meet other men here for sex sir"

Me:
"not interested mate, find someone else"

Police:
"have you been drinking sir"

Me:
"no"

Police:
"I have reason to believe you have been drinking sir"

etc etc etc etc

Anyway, after I'd been breathalysed, the van and myself were searched.
So, I asked for my NOTICE OF ENCOUNTER to detail having been stopped/searched etc.
I got it in the end, although they took ages getting it right...
Moral:
Keep your mouth shut and just put-up with it !

I promise to not mention my problem in understanding why a transit with 3 cops in it was wandering around laybys at 2 in the morning.....

Unfortunately Botach my friend, it's sadly true.

The old bill aren't interested in "real" crime any more because that means they have to think. It's much easier to nick somebody (and generate funds) under one of "Nu Labia's" 3,700 odd new laws that the honest law abiding person breaks practically every day of the week.

Stop to take a much needed pi$$ at the roadside because it's distracting your attention.....that'll be £80 and an ASBO

Tell the little scrotes to get the f*ck off your property.....that'll be £80 and an ASBO

Report a burglary and the best you can hope for is a crime reference number to give your insurance company

Starting to get the picture now?

I wouldn't pi$$ on the old bill if they were on fire.

I don't despise the old bill because they are authority, I despise them because they are next to f*cking useless.

Could you honestly say that the vehicle was being used for "ambulance purposes"?

Hi

Well I was going directly to hospital from the scene of the accident, Im more anoyed at the polices lack of action at the scene rather than the fine and the 3 points to be honest. I have made a complaint to this effect now with NWP. I dont expect it to get anywere but I may feel better.

I think police only get involved if a crime has been commited that they feel should result in a prison sentence, i.e. a real proper crime, not silly shunts in cars right?

Although I wil say the the attempted assault possibly should've come under this category, and certainly if the guy that hit you appeared to be drunk (agression would be a sign).

Hmmm, a bloke hit me from behind a while back and refused to give insurance details, and the policeman who was two cars behind him at the time was very helpful in oiling the communication skills of the rear ender...

It depends where you live, and which police area you come under.
Here in Cumbria we have a largely rural area, and MOST of the police personnel are fair, firm, polite and helpful.
That has NOT always been the case. In the past there have been individuals whose behaviour and attitude fell well below what would be expected of them.

Some have retired, some have left, and only a very small number have been disciplined openly.
One particular individual is in prison.
This only happens if members of the police themselves report and take appropriate action when they see something wrong.
I know that the individuals I identified WERE known to their colleagues too, and so eventually the situation improved.

I know Gixxer has had some bad experiences with one force in particular, and I too had some negative experience with an officer of the same force.
It would appear that a situation exists where the bad apples dont get the attention they deserve from their superiors.

I appreciate that it is difficult to address such attitudes instantly - if the public see widespread disciplinary measures suddenly, it would lower confidence in the police - but since bad attitude does that anyway, then there has to be a trade off.

We have enough users and members around the whole country, to have members post their thoughts on most forces - perhaps they would like to post them up here, for an informal league table?
We might then see what the better forces are doing right.

On another tack, I'm told that the new Chief Constable of North Yorkshire is a firm believer in Speed Cameras, so tey might be making more of an appearance there.
I hope he takes a look around first to see which forces are doing best in improving driver behaviour!!
