HANG ON... has someone improved the font since 7:30 am this morning... this is much better on my work PC...

Is it worth pointing out that there is a parallel thread on this topic running in the 'what's new, announcements...' forum? Perhaps one or other should be locked?

One thing I noticed about the old forum is that any thread that had new posts was bounced to the top of the list, on this version it appears that they stay static but are highlighted. Can they be moved up to the top of the list - does this allow this function?

As it goes I am a bit, but not THAT colour blind. Nothing is red for me :/ All I see is a tiny little icon next to threads with 'new' posts in them, however those are showing up for threads I can see from the post times have nothing new in.

I think this is because a whole bunch of threads have been stickied or made as announcements which means the latests threads in some areas (general chat) only start about 5 down. The lack of visible (aside from a fairly discrete icon) to seperate types of thread makes this hard to spot.

I use PHPBB3 for a support forum I run, but all it does is hold FAQ's for people to read and no one can post except me with new Questions & Answers - so until now I've not noticed it's shortcomings - I even use the default theme too

I'll see what we can do about alternate styles - but what we're not going to do is put mods or addons on to the basic phpbb, that makes it far too difficult to manage and upgrade.

As for new posts - haven't you spotted the "show new posts" link at the top when you log on. A vast improvement on the previous board...

I guess always hard to adjust to change. I admit I find it harder to use at the moment. I suppose it will grow on me as I get used to it. I am fair minded. I think we all hate sudden changes though.

For the first time ever, I find myself agrreeing with mpaton2004 - a significant event in itself.

The old format was simple to use,easy to read, easy to navigate around - so why change it? I really do despair of this desire for constant change.

One might accuse me of being a grumpy old dinosaur who would automatically resist any kind of change. No doubt some people will. I do not oppose change per se - it is an inevitable process - but I deplore change which takes place merely for the sake of change, or to be more "up to date", or because "its the latest thing", or because it "looks better".

The well-worn cliche "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is as true as it ever was. No doubt we will, in time, get used to this new board - people always do - but why, for heaven's sake, change it in the first place???

As ed_m mentioned, boards still running the old phpBB2 code are a magnet for hack attacks, so I've been wondering for a while now when, not if, SS would be migrated to the more secure phpBB3 code. This isn't just change for change's sake, this is a long overdue change for the good of the entire forums.

Other than the new style, which just takes a bit of getting used to, the only thing that frustrates me about 3 vs 2 is that 3 renders like complete crap on my Windows-based PDA (PocketIE hates phpBB3 sites thanks to Microsoft being stupid enough to try making it more than just a mobile browser, and the non PocketIE-derived browsers that are available - which do render phpBB3 properly - just aren't mature enough for my liking). Fortunately the hacked-together workaround script I wrote when another of my fave forums made the switch to 3 seems to work ok here as well, so I can still get my daily fix of SS whilst I'm away from the comforts of my home PC...
