Well OK, it's fine if used by an aware driver like you, but I dread to think what could happen with people like the aforementioned old lady who have no idea of its presence. The answer presumably is to make it so that you have to turn it on using the menu.

Basically, it's no different in normal use; the only difference is that if you just nudge it, it flashes the indicator three times.

What I don't like is the indicators on my father's 3-series, which don't stay in the left or right position: you push them to commence indicating and in theory they self-cancel, or else you nudge them off again, but I tend to end up then indicating the other way :x

Yep, Vauxhalls do that too, the stalk has two positions in either direction. a nudge to position 1 does to 3 winks thing, a nudge to position to switches them on proper.

To cancel the indicator, you have to nudge to position 1 in the same direction.

This leads to people in rental/courtesy/company Vectras to start indicating one way and then the other and back again trying desperately to cancel the bloody indicators, eventually giving up and cancelling them by swerving violently in one direction and back in order to trigger the auto cancel, then deciding not to bother indicating again until they get back into a decent car. Most people don't even know of the 3 winks thing and assume the feeling of there being two positions is due to poor build quality, therefore they must do something about the indicator or it will stay on forevery. Every direction change they manage resets the count of 3.

I really wish Vauxhall wouldn't do this just to save a couple of quid as a 5 position switch is cheaper than a 3 position switch with a latching mechanism. Failing that, I wish rental companies would stop providing cars with non-standard controls.

While I'm on the Vauxhall hate, their CAN-BUS implementation sucks, it is slow and laggy. This in itself doesn't bother me but what the hell were they thinking attaching the accelerator to it. There is typically a half second lag between you moving the accelerator pedal and the car actually responding. Hope you didn't need to accelerate out of danger, not to mention the fact that it's now impossible to heel and toe, though I suppose that latter one is not something that will bother your typical Vauxhall Vectra driver.

I wish car indicators didn't have an auto cancel. I'm always ready to cancel the indicator anyway and often it cancels when I don't want it do, such as roundabouts on top of trunk roads which have a long straight section.

We were talking about this on Friday, as driving in to work entails taking a left junction then another shortly after and you have to hold the indicator stalk down as it makes a nasty click in order to stop it cancelling.

On a related note, I find cars with indicator stalks on the right (such as Mrs TheBoy's MX-5) ok overall, but very unnatural when it comes to indicating off roundabouts.

Whoever told Vauxhall/VW/Audi that 3 flashes was enough for a lane change is a moron. You need at least 5 flashes for a proper change with proper observation.

As is my habit, this morning I was sitting at one of the roundabouts on the Blandford Bypass watching an endless stream of cars go by...

Said roundabout has a heavy weighting of traffic going from one side to another across my nose, so to speak, plus people from the opposite direction turning right, i.e. passing in front of me. I get very annoyed therefore when someone arrives at the turning to my right, then turns left into my turning without indicating, as this usually means I miss another opportunity to get out*.

A woman in an old Fiesta arrived thus - without indicating, but slowing right up - so I suspected that she might be turning left. She did, but as she did so, presumably to let me know that I could go, she flashed me.

So in summary: new method of indicating off a roundabout: flash the car waiting at the next turning instead.

Can we see it catching on?

The highway code clearly states that the flashing of headlights is an indication that the flashing vehicle is there and should not be seen as anything else. There are many grey areas in driving generated only by road users who simply do not know the highway code or who choose to be god and decide something has an alternative meaning thats better for us all and contrary to the highway code. Lack of knowledge, understanding and correct application is a major contributor to crash rates. Many people only find their interpritation is wrong when the insurers, police or courts point it out. At a roundabout you give way to traffic comming from your right ALREADY on the roundabout. Traffic comming from your right but has not yet entered has no more right than you do. ( however you should always drive safely and defensively and if you feel the approach speed of that veh may be a hazard or danger should you enter, then you should always take the safe option and wait!) Whatever drivers do at roundabouts you should always expect the unexpected. In my experience I would say only 1 in 50 drivers get roundabouts correct and a significant number are so bad they may as well see a roundabout as the best way to knock the earth out of its natural orbit using only a piece of chewing gum.......some would have more chance of achieving the latter than negotiating a roundabout.

*Equally people who come from ahead of me and turn right without indicating - but as I assume that they want me to think that they're going straight on, I pull out anyway if it's remotely safe

I've got another cracker here. Anyone know the Nursling Industrial Estate just off the M271 in Southampton? When you leave B&Q you take the first left off a large roundabout, and almost immediately come to a junction roundabout over the toip of the M271.
Chap in a Vectra in front of me leaving B&Q put his RIGHT indicator on, and turned left, as described above. :?
He then (and there's no other word for it) lurched into the right-hand lane, at which point I thought "Aha, he's turning right onto the M271", born out by the fact the right hand indicator stayed on throughout.
He then proceeded slowly round the roundabout in the right-hand lane before taking the straight-ahead exit, carving in front of a couple of cars who'd come alongside him, who he then held up for the next half-mile.

So in summary: If going left then straight at two consecutive roundabouts, begin indicating right before the first one, and keep doing so for the whole manouvre!

Supposedly 4 is the number quoted in safety circles .
Strange that VW & VAG group have the one touch for a few flashes idea -notice that Ford now do this .

4 isn't enough. IF you miss a car coming up to overtake OR the dimwit in the outside lane decides to change to the middle lane without looking then 4 flashes isn't enough for their reaction time to kick in. A lot of the time 5 isn't enough.

Now Nos4r2 ,I know you drive heavies ,so please don't take offence at this ,but sometimes on M/WAYS , you're lucky to get any more than one flash from some heavies before they decide to pull out .(Always amazes me ,even though a high percentage of the time I'm expecting them to come out ,sometimes even flashing them )
