saw my first 08 registered truck the other day. i had the keys to it :D

Image

an AXOR with EPS :o

and of course lets keep it tight being new and all that

Image

its not an actros but it is much closer than the previous models. not a bad motor to drive. it certainly raises the bar for the other mid range trucks ie CF, FM etc

When I drove AXx0rs I found the gear change to be exceptionally "clanky". Are they automatics yet ?
All our trucks are now.

this one is auto or manual. the gearstick itself is the same one as the actros. the major difference is the lack of clutch. i like a clutch for reversing

out of all the trucks i have driven the actros is still my favourite. any model is good but the megaspace executive i had last year was a nice little treat
Image

the floor is about 5 and a half foot above the ground and at 6 foot i could still stand up inside. my agency fell out with that client so its been a long time since i last drove that one

We've got 08 Plate trucks, a couple of them.

As an agency driver i was shocked to be one of the first to drive them.

Unfortunatly they are MAN TGA 440's :(

Usually at work i try and get a Volvo FH 440, most of the other drivers like the MAN just for the size inside compared to the Volvo's but now i think a lot of drivers at my place are prefering the Volvo's since its about impossible to get one.

I drove a 54 plate Daf XF the other day was a nice change to drive a unit with a manual gear box, first time since god knows i've not driven an automatic.

tesco are a mixed fleet of 56 plate CFs with a manual box, 57 plate CFs with auto box or 57 plate AXORs with manual. when they allocate a 57 plate CF they ask you if you are ok with it. even agency drivers get the choice. personally i just take whatever they offer. although i prefer manual i dont really care what they give me. once im on the road i enjoy myself anyway. as far as shop work goes its a good job. when the directions are correct of course

That is a Merc V8 right?

Merc supply V8's to at least one manufacturer of forage harvesters and combine harvesters and there seems to be a fair bit of "disatisfaction" with them. I believe the main problem motor is the OM460. I think that is the 16.1litre V8. They don't seem to like running under full load all the time (pity, when that is what the job demands...) and die. Do trucks have the same problem? I did here they have had problems in all applications.

There are 2 adam - axor and actros. Axor are smaller and lower powered (up to 420hp, 4x2 and 6x2 tractors) and actros are the bigger, more powerful ones (440hp +,6x2 and 6x4). (Don't worry, I didn't know that off the top of my head, I have access to the Mercedes technical data through work...! )

I've seen plenty of Axor V8's, but no actros' as yet.

Alot of the 08 trucks, not just Mercs, seem to be having ECU issues. Don't even get me started on Renault and Iveco! I fail to see what is wrong with a basic engine and a gearbox with a clutch and manual lever. Trouble is, the new emissions controls, amongst other things, demand more complicated engine management.

Sixy, I think the engine failures were on the emision controlled engines. This appears to have been happening for a while now so I'm not talking brand new 08 engines and I think off road engines have a bit of a time lag on when the emmisions regs kick, might be wrong on that one though.

That OM460 appears to like spitting out injectors and lunching turbos and generally being a pain, so not trouble with fancy pants electronics.

funny you should say that. i am toying with the idea of a trip to hawaii next year to study the volcanic activity there. there is a constant flow of lava that look very interesting 8-)

it is a handsome beast though

shame i have just accepted 2 months in tesco so i wont be driving her for a while. judging by the mileage, i would say she has been in service for less than 2 weeks
