The proposed changes to VED are being discussed today and also the road hauliers have a fuel tax protest. The Green lobby say the Government is going soft on the environment.

RRC R4 had Tim Yeo (Chairman of some environmental study group) on this morning talking about this and essentially defending high motoring taxes. After a few moments I realised that I totally disagreed with everything he said and even that his arguments were tripe. The interviewer, of course, didn't take him to task.

This guy is a high Tory and will be coming to a ballot box near you in 2010. No matter who you vote for you will get this green crap spouted.

I suspect that it has more to do with the fact that Labour has run up MASSIVE government debt and that an incoming Tory government will still need to maintain high levels of taxation in order to service it.

Motoring taxes are good this way because, whatever the greenies say, for the most part people cannot avoid paying them!

Isn't this the same Tory Party that helped put out the 'Way Forward: Stop the War on Motorists' pamphlet that Bombus links to in his signature?

Ironically, a floundering Labour government is the best hope for keeping motoring taxes down: when the Tories get the thumping mandate in 2010 that seems likely, they will be able to do (and tax) what they like - for a while at least.

Scary but very true.
