Daily Mail-Lorry driver fined £275 for killing cyclist
no, no, NO!
he was fined £275 for
not looking properly before pulling put!It is for the criminal courts to punish culpable actions, not their unfortunate consequences
Quote:
"life only worth £275!"
neither is it the job of the criminal courts to put a value on a life. that is the civil courts job. In any case the £275 fine is a TAX and will go to feed the insatiable maw of the treasury not the victims dependednts!
The civil case againts the driver/drivers employers will undoubtedly place a "Value" on the victims life several orders of magnitude greater than that of the fine, And unlike the TAX this money
will help to support the victims dependents.(less the ambulance chasing lawyers cut)
The driver will probabally never drive a truck again (He will likly neither be insurable nor employable)
Unlke the wreclkless cyclist in the other thread who deliberatly cycled, at speed, into a group of pedestrians because they wouldnt get out of his way I cannot see how socioty would benefit from either a larger fine (He is out of a job and wont be able to pay it) or a prison sentance (which costs the rest of us upwards of £70,000pa and should be reserved for those who pose a real and continuing threat to the rest of us-which he doesnt)
