Driver aged 21 was stopped by GMP whilst chatting on his mobile phone. He claimed to be his 27 year old brother
He had NO licence nor insurance.. so he gave his brother's name to the officers. His brother played along with him apparently

Result? 3 month sentence.. suspended for 2 years for the 21 year old plus 1oo hours community service.
His older brother got a 2 month sentence..suspended for 2 years and 60 hours community service.

But given that those who try to diddle PC Gatso get far sterner sentences.. one wonders just what we are trying to achieve as regards road safety here

when using a mobile phone is more dangerous that blipping above the lolly by a small margin.. and the powers of obervation by the police officers strikes me as astounding. Had the brothers been identical twins.. I could perhaps understand their confusion.. but we are talking of a rather wide age gap.. which makes some differentiating traits in appearance stand out somewhat

But it's not just the handy use.. .. it's the illegality . complete illegality of that driver. Hardly a deterrent..
I worked hard to pass my driving test. Wanted to achieve it.
I worked hard to buy my first car and help pay towards insuring it. My parents did help my finances.. as a student .. and partially funded my wheels.. and I held many student jobs too.
I still work hard to pay for my toys. I pay towards these louts who basically steal from all of us when they drive illegally on the roads. No. justice demands something more from this type.. if we are to deter.
Justice has to punish fairly without revenge. But also has to deter.
So ... what should we be doing to this type. Is the sentence enough? I do not think so as it offers no incentive to either learn to drive or induce the responsible maturity.
So what should we be insisting on to at least punish fairly and without OTT revenge?
