Just received this from the SMMT:
RAC report on UK motoring
The RAC has published its annual report into the UK road environment and the perceptions of UK motorists. The ‘RAC Report on Motoring 2005’ focuses on road safety and how the behaviour of Britain’s 28 million motorists can make roads a dangerous place. The report concludes that the UK has a remarkably stable road safety record, but one that also has many complex problems linked to the behaviour and attitudes of motorists. For example, many drivers do not consider driving over the legal limit to be a danger to themselves or others. Statistics showed that in 2003 290,607 casualties were reported on our roads. Just over one per cent (3,508) were fatalities and 12 per cent (33,707) were serious injuries. The RAC concluded that ten people (15 per cent of which are children) are killed every day on UK roads and 100 are seriously injured. The RAC would like to see more emphasis on the human and financial costs of irresponsible and reckless driving, alongside the environmental impact of cars.
