Can anyone recommend a decent free anti-virus software. The one I was using has just expired and I don't really want to pay for Norton or McAfee.

Also I’ve tried deleting my old software files, some will and, some won’t even thought I have my UAC turned off.

Further, which browser is best IE7 or Firefox.

I use AVG free which got four stars and "best budget buy" in a recent Computer Shopper Magazine test. McAFEE virusscan plus was their "Best Buy" but it is £35 per annum

Define "best"? ;)
I'd say Firefox for many reasons, and then someone will disagree with me, and there will be an argument which will last many pages. :bunker:

No there won't

I like Firefox but I haven't tried IE7. IE6 was bad enough

Firefox and Avast.

Firefox can be enhanced with a range of add ons, such as "Colourful Tabs" and a variety of page magnifiers, "Flagfox" (enables an instant ID of the server location) and "FastVideoDownload" for capturing Flash files from web pages.

Avast is free for the home version, but can be upgraded for business use. The interface is easy, and the updates unobtrusive.

I used to use AVG Free but recently it's started missing a lot and throwing up a lot of false positives so I can't really recommend it any more.

My current recommendation is for Avira AntiVir, the free version does occasionally pop up a window encouraging you to buy the full version but it's pretty easy to disable this and then it pretty much gets on with it without bothering you. Also it uses a lot less system resources than AVG.

The current version narrowly missed getting the prestigious VB100 award. It got every virus in the test but failed due to a single false positive. For a free product I'm prepared to live with that. AVG missed a fair few and had many more false positives.

I'll second the suggestion for Avira, I've found it to be very good for a free virus checker.

I'm also a keen Firefox supporter, haven't used IE in years! Google's Chrome is worth investigating if you just want a quick, light browser. The only thing that prevents it being my first choice is that it doesn't work with AI Roboform at present.

As has already been pointed out, it's hard to assign status of 'Best' without knowing what's most important to you.

You may be unable to delete some old software files if they have been opened in the boot up process, try using something like Revo uninstaller to remove any old programmes you no longer want. It'll delete the remaining files on the next boot up if necesssary. Then use Wise to tidy up the registry afterwards. It'll warn you if any entries appear unsafe to delete so you shouldn't do any harm but do back up the registry before you start. The programme will prompt you to do that anyway!

Hope this helps!

Thanks Beamer and the rest who have replied. I'll look into those.

Yes and also Spybot, so I'm told. They work well together.

Why aren't people prosecuted for making viruses? Or shot?

I thought it was because the culprit is often a 14 year old kid who can't be prosecuted and goes on in later life to work for a software company.

These days it's because they're usually made in countries where the police have different priorities than computer crime, Russia, Nigeria, China etc. etc. The viruses are often used to take control of your PC and they can then sell the CPU time they have available and use it to send spam or DOS someone's competitor and so on.
