Travor Mcdonut tonight on ITV at 8:00 pm, part two of their road safety slot. Part 1 was reasonable and contained some good messages about road engineering, lets see if they can keep it up

I only saw the second half, the intelligent braking system looked interesting.
That Leeds based Skoda, when the driver hit the thirty limit and the car suddenly slowed down, did the brake lights activate, they didn't say, but if they didn't, we are going to be looking at loads of rear enders.

And once again, no mention of educating pedestrians or cyclists, that when they take on a car, they're going to lose.

I was once again horrified at the prospect of speed limiters.
I can see it now, everyone with their foot to the floor to get the max speed out in any given situation. If you aint in control of the car then safety will suffer.

Also noted the absolute bollocks was trawled out as per usual, and at one point I heard that if all cars were fitted with limited then there woud be two thirds less die on the road. Isnt that like saying 2/3rds are currently killed by excesive speed?!?

Interesting how the presenter felt like he SHOULD be going faster and WANTED to go faster, and WANTED others to just overtake him.

I thinks its all pie in the sky stuff anyway, to just try and make a big deal about speed so they can continue to try and justify the scamera operation. ie 'We'd really like to to slow down, and heres the technology were considering as were so serious about it, but in the mean time heres an FPN'

How will the SCP's rake in any speeding money if we are all forced to go at the speed limit. Strange this is that if that day ever arrives, the lies about the casualties from 'speeding' will be brought to light, as I reckon the death toll will rise.

I also noted that the limiter cuts in AT the new speed limit, so he was still slowing down from 50 after entering a 30. Round here the wankers will have you for that. Perhaps THATS how the SCP's will continue to make money!

This is all bollocks.

I have suffered from speed limiters for 10 years, and they are pants.
The motorway speed limit for HGVs is 60mph, yet we are limited to 56mph.
It is so hypnotic sitting there pegged at a speed that is unrealistic.
I do realise that Trucks are bigger and heavier than 20 or more years ago, but the Trucks themselves are vastly superior in every way than 20 or more years ago.

As posted on the SUV thread - first part of the programme looked at SUVs and legislation which would be equally protective to pedestrians and cyclists should there be a collison. This has been in under wraps since 1985 - and also focussed briefly on ESP. It did not mention that some vehicles already have this - and some also combined with ASR - and seemed to attack the car industry for dragging their feet. Will agree that the safety devices are currently overpriced - especially when ESP could cost as little as £100 to fit as standard.

The final bit focused on the speed limiter. I can see problems with this - lot of rear end shunts could occur, particularly if the car behind is not equipped with this device. It also takes away the level of skill - what happens if there is a satellite failure? If you lose satellite contact under a long bridge or if in a tunnel?

I think it needs a lot more thought. Besides as others have already said - all road users have a shared responsibility and we all need constant re-education, re-energising, and reinforcement as pedestrians and occasionalu cyclists.

I felt for the poor woman that got hit while crossing the road at a crossing point, by a car doing 65mph.
She was rather pleased about the design features for new cars to make them more pedestrian "Friendly", and wished they had been in place when she was hit.
I think the point that should have been made that the new features would have given her a better chance if the car had been doing 30mph, but if she had been hit by a piece of very soft foam rubber doing 65mph, her injuries would have happened anyway.
It was the speed of the vehicle that caused her injuries, not so much the non friendly design of it.

What about the people (middle lane hoggers most likley candidates) who are dordling along foot to the floor in a chain of traffic, who then passes from a 30mph to a NSL (still with foot to the floor) without noticing? ....bang!.... is it only me who can see this becoming quite a popular passtime?

Or even worse over taking on a stretch of road only to go NSL to 30mph then to find your gap filled by nummed zombie-like trailing traffic???
