I'd imagine that it's because if they wanted to stop your car they could simply turn it off, other than that I can't think of anything else that it would be useful for.

The only advantage I can see is that, assuming 100% accurate data and positioning information, you would break fewer laws.

It is however highly improbable for the data and positioning information to be correct all of the time, so you'd still have to watch out for restriction changes. Which removes the only advantage I can see.

The main one is that a limiter removes the possibility of speeding ticket! An alarm would be better. That would remove the possibility of a speeding ticket, if you choose to take notice of it.

Yes I would love an alarm that tells me when I am speeding.

So would I, and it's not difficult to set up. You just need a central list of zones and speeds, and beam it out over the network. If a temporary limit gets set, it needs to go in the list first, with start/end times. You'd have to have some kind of GPS to say where you are, and compare it to the list of zones/speeds etc. It's not hard at all.

Mmm, assuming 100% accurate data from a government IT project. ;)

Another thought, it would limit your speed, but how would it know your speed? Would it be from GPS or similar? If so how accurate is that when travelling round bends? What about when it looses position lock? If it is from the wheel sensors like the speedo that's fairly easy to override. Or is there another way?

....that may have not been considered:

How about when descending a steep hill.? Knock the box out of gear and coast well above the limit on many slopes.

How about when entering an area of high RF activity where the receiver is de-sensed and incoming control signal is lost.? This could be interpreted by the control gear as a release and a subsequent increase in velocity as the right foot will be firmly planted on the loud pedal. Rear end shunts in vast numbers methinks.

Coasting is already solved, the brakes apply to limit the speed.
Signal loss, the previous parameters will apply until an update (in any case, when/if galileo starts operation the signal will be up to ten times stronger than at present)
Wheel sensor override ?
The information on wheel rotation could be derived (and is in some cases now) from the abs wheel rotors. So, you're going to disconnect the abs ?
And do not forget another aspect of driver assistance systems....collision avoidance (already fitted to some high-end cars), vehicle stability assistance....
This research has been ongoing for over a decade, many of the proposed systems are modelled on existing avionic designs which aircraft have been flying with for years now...instead of "fly by wire" it'll be "drive by wire"

As a driver, you'll be aware of the many circumstances where it would be suicidal to apply the brakes in an arbitrary fashion - without regard for the road surface/weather conditions for instance.

I wonder who'll take the blame for injury and deaths under such conditions...?

That is trivial to assure. The database becomes the de-facto standard. If it's not in the DB, you don't get done.

It would use the output of your speedo.

You'll stand out like a sore thumb as you zoom along, so fill yer boots - with speeding tickets!

Since the throttle is backed off (or ignition timing retarded) until the vehicle slows below the limit it seems that the throttle closure will continue until the engine is receiving no fuel in an attempt to limit speed.
As for the rest, ISA et-al, the research has been running for nearly 10 years.

could be applied... depends how the system is eventually implemented.

given you'll need i expect ESP as a minimum for this brake intervention.... you already have slip control & stability control to catch any instability

people seem to be expecting the system just to hammer the brakes on, in reality i expect the demanded decel would be very low for both safety and comfort reasons.
