Best remembered for "Empire of the Sun" - but perhaps to me his most significant novel was "Crash" which took a very dark insight and exploration of the human interest in car accidents. The novel was shocking .. on a par with Sartre's "Nausea" in terms of causing the reader to feel "appalled".

In some ways - "Crash" was a daming indictment on humanity - whereby the pyschology of society's rather solid marriage with technology/celebreties/consumer culture are explored with a damning conclusion. Perhaps the comment from one publisher that the author "was beyond help" at the time was rather poignant given that many of the themes in that book reflect today's society only too well.
