Wow, another debate about semantics. SS should really host a language-related forum for those who aren't really interested in talking about road safety.

Discussing the weasel-words used by the speed-kills brigade would seem to be relevant to the forum's purpose. Mote so than talking about new cars or the consumption of stout.

If you beat somebody over the head with a glass ashtray, it is a weapon.
If it sat on the table being used as an ashtray, it is not.

There are very few instances of people setting out to deliberately run down a victim with intent to kill, so to describe a vehicle as a weapon is wrong in nearly ALL cases.

HOWEVER if it WERE a weapon, then a speed camera is the wrong tool for preventing it's use!

Under what circumstances would gun crime be combated by cameras and penalties sent out by post a week later?

But as said .. things only become "weapon" when used with such intent by a "human" being

I think the speed cam ist a weapon against driving licences when set at too low a tolerance They zap our cars at lower than speed limit. Papa remark on that when running me into Keswick centre yesterday. It has the tinted glass .., I prefer it not to be tinted so they see my funny face pull at them.. Grrrrrr! I not been cleared to drive as "fit" yet .. which ist a bind.. but then I have to practise what I've been preaching for 5 years .. :( (I am pumping the iron brews.. Urgghhh! und having to follow orders for once.. ho-hum miaow! I cannot even ride a bike as this too much :( )

It was less about semantics and more about the way emotive language is used to divert attention from real road safety by demonising drivers. It is expected of brake, however that such labels are used by judges is worrying.

I did try to turn it back towards the original thread start by discussing intent and responsibility in the context of road safety.
