http://www.lep.co.uk/news/Speed-camera-is-petrolbombed.5252047.jpI know this location well. The camera is situated 300 yards after a junction just over the brow of a bridge. Nasty looking skid mark appeared there recently as well

They are moving heaven and earth to catch the culprits!!

They obviously place the well being of their income generator ahead of the safety of local children and communities...

"There are obviously going to be costs and that is money which will not be able to be spent on doing road safety initiatives in schools or in the community, all because of this mindless vandalism.

"I am sure all the people who live in the community share our concern that this may lead to increased speeding in the area and ultimately there may a tragedy on this stretch of road as a result of this selfish and mindless action."

There have been several tragedies on this stretch of road already. However, they don't seem to have involved breaking the speed limit.

In a stroke of irony, the resident who asked for traffic calming, got a chicane outside his home. Now he cannot leave his driveway in peak times, because traffic is backed up behind the chicane, and drivers wont give way and let him out for fear that oncoming waiting traffic will set off and keep THEM held up!

Some councillors are of the opinion that the traffic calming is actually CAUSING accidents - two drivers collided head on in a chicane. The Highways Department claimed that is not the case, it was simply a misunderstanding over who had right of way!

I have never been happy with chicanes. Misunderstandings and errors DO occur and highway design should (as far as is possible) try to mitigate the consequences of them. deliberatly creating a situation where a simple error of judgement or misunderstanding will result in a head on collision (even a low speed one) is clearly not a good idea, but then I'm just an engineer, not a highly qualified council hghways officer!

Dusty your forgetting that chicanes bring drivers under the speed limit and once your under the speed limit nothing bad can happen. I bet one or both of the drivers was speeding when they collided and thats what caused the collision!

In Windermere, we have a chicane on a bend.

I protested against it when it was proposed to no avail.
The situation is made worse by vehicles parked on the inside of the bend, and drivers who DON'T have priority, speeding up to get themselves onto the chicane before anything comes the other way, meaning drivers approaching the chicane who DO have priority have to be both very observant and cautious, AND quick on the brakes!

There have been so many near misses, and what is worse is that it is a raised chicane, close to the entrance to the recreation ground, which is used as a crossing point by children and adults, who think the narrowed width makes it safer to cross there!

If he just said the text in red it would of made more sense!

When I first joined the forums I though Britains roads were the same as Ireland's and while most of what was said I agreed with, I thought people were making a fuss over nothing on others. then I went to Belfast for a weekend, big change since then
