tempoary signs have to be lit to an average 100 lumins across the face of the sign. How bright is that? could that be provided with a battery light the size of a standard flashing road lamp and how often would the batteries need changing?
they usually hold two of those big 9v batteries.

<SIGH> Just when you want a Paul - hey ! :(

I found this on the RS Component site ...
and here but I looked up 100 lumens and they then say 1200 ?? but that has a life of 12,000 hrs

and [url=http://docs-europe.electrocomponents.com/webdocs/0af3/0900766b80af3da3.pdf]Cree LED lighting

Find this interesting too.

You can illuminate a sign with 100 lumens of light with about 5 watts....you just have to focus the light onto just the sign....

I think there is a bit of confusion here over units.

Lumens are a measure of the total amount of light emitted by a source. Illumination level is measured in lux (lumens per square metre) falling on the object.

To give you some idea, the minimum illumination level of a desk in an office should be 300 lux.

100 lumens can be realised with a 1 watt power source using commercially available LED tech.

I don’t know what 9V battery you are referring to, but if the energy capacity is anything like this 6V version; two of these (using an appropriate switching supply) will yield 156WH, so will give about 156 hours of illumination in this case, so about 2 weeks of useful life.

1 Lux is 1 lumen per square meter. It is possible to say ‘100 lumens across the sign’, but the intensity will be dependent on the area of the sign.
The current intensity at my desk is 550 lux.

For example, a normal 100 watt light-bulb has a luminous efficiency of about 17.5, emitting 1750 lumens of light. A 13 watt fluorescent bulb, by contrast, has an efficiency of about 56, emitting around 730 lumens of light. The sun, in contrast, has an efficiency of around 93
