Dad murdered by convicted killer
Nicola Dowling

June 08, 2009

A DAD jailed for disqualified driving was killed in his prison cell by a convicted murderer with a violent temper.

Anthony Hesketh, 37, was found face down on the floor of the cell they shared with a ligature around his neck.

His killer Clement McNally, 28 was serving a life sentence at Strangeways prison for stabbing a friend to death at a party. But despite having a personality disorder and being known for violent outbursts, prison staff decided he was suitable to share a cell with Mr Hesketh who was serving just four months.

An inquest into Mr Hesketh's death at the Civil Courts of Justice was told McNally had called prison staff to his cell on the afternoon of September 15 2003 telling them: "Well I think I've done him. I want out of my pad."

He was also said to have told staff the other man had 'wanted a fight' and that he had 'done him' before calmly walking out of the cell carrying two black plastic bags of property and asking to go to the segregation unit.

Home Office pathologist Charles Wilson said Mr Hesketh had died as a result of strangulation with bruises on his shoulders and neck suggesting the other man may have knelt on his back as he applied pressure with a ligature made from strips of blue t-shirt material.

At the time of his death Mr Hesketh from Eastham Way, Worsley, who had one son, was serving four months for driving while disqualified but was also due to appear at Salford Magistrates Court later in the month on drugs charges.

Mr Hesketh's sister, Dawn Hopwood, broke down in the witness box when she said she had remained in contact with her brother but only by telephone because of his lifestyle.

The inquest jury was told McNally had a troubled childhood, had suffered abuse and time in care and had been diagnosed as having an 'emotionally unstable personality disorder' with symptoms including outbursts of anger and violence.

His prison records showed he had lost his tempter fifteen or sixteen times with staff and had shared a cell with ten different cell mates before being put in with Mr Hesketh on September 10 - five days before he was killed.

After the killing another prisoner reported McNally had been in a bad mood that morning and had punched his bed when he had been offered a bowl of cereal.

The inquest was told McNally from Ashton had later pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his cell mate on the grounds of diminished responsibility but had never given a full explanation of why he had taken the other man's life to police.

The judge in the case said he expected McNally to remain in jail for the rest of his natural life.

He was due to be brought from prison to give evidence at the inquest today.

Ye Gods!

OK .. so the driver was not cleaner than clean.. but.. duty of care? WHY has it taken so long to hit court? :? :? :?

Got story from in-law who alert to MEN site. My thoughts to the bereaved. That cannot be easy to come to terms with.

Yes .. I agree that the dead man .., OK .. issues. But all the same he should not have died that way

So .. how do we deal with all this? Reconcile? Have right justice?

I make the loaded questions here. No right answer.. I KNOW this.. but we can suggest? Oder?

Look .. we CARE .. We would not post as we do with COAST values und refer to all known good practices if we did not care about our fellow human beings. If the trolls want to disrepute us because there exist little argument to contrary .. then they show themselves up as deranged fools who have nothing more than politically correct lip service to road safety.

I dare say these trolls will try to twist my words as anit-police.establishment or whatever. I happen to know that the posts made hold water.. else why else would these trolls post as they do? Might it just be that we post up the truth? Truth which the prats cannot handle nor able to challenge with fact?

WE WIN THEN! :P

Why is this sort of case not "corperate manslaughter" on the part of the relevent authorities/organisations??

Case is still on-going per the Manchester press.

So far - we've read of a series of serious mistakes as regards the killer. This guy should have been in Broadmoor or similar.

But even if in a secure unit for dangerously insane with criminal tendencies - I think we should still offer decent pyschiatric care all the same. We will never cure complete insanity. All we seem to do is sedate the symptoms. In many cases, sadly, that's all we can do.

But all the same - a chap imprisoned for a fairly minor crime should not be sharing a cell with a seriously hardened or known as violent criminal. I would have thought an "open prison" may be more suitable for those who commit stupid offences - which still have to show "society's disapproval" - but who are not "seriously criminally minded".
