can anyone please explain why when one side of the carriageway is closed for roadworks, the contraflow is reduced to 40MPH? there are cones separating the lanes but other than that, is it not effectively a SC road but, in many cases, wider, better surfaced, without bends and without the danger of slower traffic and side roads so therefore safer?
i can understand protecting road workers on closed lanes but when we are talking about a central reservation between them and the traffic, especially with the concrete dividers in place as is often the case nowadays, i dont see the logic behind a 40MPH limit on what is a effectively a safer than normal SC section of road :?

Hey, there's no logic at all in British roads and speed limits any more, have you not noticed.....??? ...;-)

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

I believe it may be to do with reduced lane width

that i could understand but the ones i have been through on the A9/M9 are not narrow lanes. there are 2 lanes each side with one side closed. the open side has those thin stick like cones between the 2 lanes and thats it so the lanes are no different at all and even then, they are still wider than the average SC A-road in scotland which is effectively what they have temporarily created so why drop the limit below 60?

On the Dorset Way it was 30mph. Lots of criminals about then there were.

It's (reverting to Rab C Nesbit slang) - youse hielan houligans with yer big wagons that cause all the problems down here -in England we NEED wider lanes ( cause awl those southern edjits have wider heads ,and Volvos to carry them in ).

    ( taking PPP mode off)
