StevieGreensheds ... I make the controversial comment to make you add more objectively..

You ought to know by now that we are pro safety. pro justice. pro fair play. I do not see how a speed cam stops a silly double white overtake. Why not simply erect sign saying "CCTV moniitor here... double white law apply" as in Germany und even Switzerland in some Kanton. I admit they TRIAL the idea so it not the Normal! I have the source. I always have a source. Ist in German. OK.. so it was "BILD" und thus not quite "FAZ" I read it 6 month ago. so will have to hunt the archives to reproduce the German lingo source. I did not think it very much so newsworthy at the time .. else I would have posted link. BUT ..I am saying they warn of monitoring. It make folk "sit up on alert" und ist a win win as it prevent any silly behaviour,. QED

Ist allowed to have some fun mit Dir .. ja? :)

Sorry if I get more mixed up here. I speak German to parents/family/colleagues.

There is no requirement to have one and they are expensive assets to deploy in a way that would give satisfactory presence. The police powers [b]canbe far better emoyed elsewhere.
I think that there is only one reason that this is suggested repeatedly and that is togive the chance of being let off with a talking to when it is known that it is too expensive to fulfil.
Why do you think that drivers detected in these operations are not checked fir other offences or PNC markers such as no insurance? You are naive I that belief.
It is most likely the police who are setting this operation up as the safety cameravans are operated by the police and police staff, all police.
This still looks like a winner all round.

You learn by a talking to. I would rather the drivers were checked as routine for no insurance/legality to drive by the way as statistically these are the most dangerous.

You spout stats.. We can do likewise. I have been decluttering. I came across some gems downloaded und we printed hard copy from TrL which blow your submarine apart .. from 2003-2006.

In one case it is fair, immediate and done from a respected authority

Every good parent, teacher, or animal trainer knows that an admonishment, to be effective, must be administered whilst the offence is fresh in the offenders memory. It creates an association between the crime and the punishment which unconsciously discourages further offences.

Indeed und also perhaps why a letter informing about some 14 days later create such anger - especially when they cannot recall the offence as it blur into distance of the "routine drive to the office"

It ist why we keep saying more well trained professional cops are needed (und I mean rational und fair minded  types who judge a situation quickly/honestly/professioonally und apply an equal fairness to all )

It is a nonsense to criticise the use of existing assets by saying it coststoo much.

I believe only you has brought up the issue of 'excessive' costs of current methods. I was merely highlighting how only one method (a comparatively ineffective one) is allowed to cost recover.

Thinking of cost recovery, if each road death costs on average a million pounds how many trafpol would saving one life pay for?

But the police don't pay the million pounds whereas they do pay the Constable's salary. This is called joined up budgeting - not!

Ah yes, I have put a certain amount of effort into trying not to be quite so cynical, unfortunately this trips me up sometimes as I forget how unbelievably stupid people can be. :)

I think it was Albert Einstein who said "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." :D
