Bad luck.

I clean forgot that my car tax was due the end of this month but luckily mrs CE is on the ball otherwise I'd be in the same boat.

lets face it, there's more than meets the eye with car tax, it's not about revenue because you'd levy an additional sum on fuel duty and have an unavoidable form of tax with no requirement for enforcement.

And don't fall for that rubbish about car tax ensuring that your other documentation is in order either becuase both MOT's and insurance are logged on a database.

Its simply a massive ponzi scheme operated by Gordon and co to keep the residents of the lower swansea valley in employment, off crack and more importantly voting labour in the booths. It's not just the swansea people either think of the printers who make the discs, the post offices to sell them and send them, not to mention all the letters, the policeman who spent all day harassing Big Tone, the clampers, the impounders and the crushers.....all funded by the magic disc. Of course the real magic is that this whole pyramid scheme is funded by us gullable motorists not central government.

Thanks Civil Engineer. I’ve often thought how much easier and more representative of what is ruining the roads it would be to just put road tax on fuel and I too don’t buy the reason that it somehow corroborates other legal requirements or not.

I know of many fixed ANPR cameras in and around Birmingham, with more on the way, not to mention the plethora of mobile ones too. So if I was using the car much at all I’m sure it would have been picked up sooner but the truth is I wasn’t. No matter, I was in the wrong but I maintain it was a sledgehammer to crack a nut and fisherman puts it more into perspective with examples of real crime and punishment.

I actually made myself out to be worse than I am I think. Like I said, they took the disc from my car but thinking about it I’m sure it must have been weeks rather than months overdue. I did in fact see the cop who pulled me as I approached a T-junction, about 300 yards away from where he was waiting, so if I did know I was untaxed I could easily have made a right turn instead of left to avoid him, but I’m not dishonest in that way and I didn’t know I was untaxed.

Like I said at the start, I really just wanted to let you know what you’re in for if it should happen to you. Speaking to a dear lady at work today she said her car was untaxed recently without realising it at a time shortly after she had her hip replacement. No disabled badge of course so how would she have faired if caught I wonder?

Sorry to hear about this Tony. At least you were aware of what was happening. Can you imagine coming out of B&Q and finding your car gone or clamped with stickers all over it - imagine the public humiliation with the latter. At least the police took you to some car park allowing some discretion.

Usually no tax will be indicators of other, more serious offences - no insurance, for example. You obviously didn't fall into this category, so impounding your car seems senseless :o

Funny you should say that... I won't mention the pub by name but they commandeered a large part of its carpark at the back where they have lots of outside benches for drinkers and smokers on, what was, a lovely sunny day who were all gathering to watch the show.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you ( drum rollImage )

Some guy who is obviously a crimminal being escorted in by the law...

I may as well have been appearing at the London Palladium  Makes you wonder if they do it that way on purpose. :scratchchin:

Correct me if I'm wrong but even real criminals doing community service don't get put on display like that? (I'm sure I read somewhere they object to wearing some jacket identifying them as such).

I took my car for an MOT today, as it has been off the road since last year it was sorned and the insurance was arranged yesterday so probably not on the database yet. I do not know if it was because of this thread but I saw more police cars today than I have in a month.

I know it is legal to drive an untaxed car to get an MOT, that did not stop me from worrying about running into an unhelpful copper though.

Is that the case even if you have done a SORN thing?

Getting near to the end of the month and the nick sheet is a bit thin?

You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at a MOT test station provided you have adequate insurance cover in place for that vehicle.

It was around Chelmsford and on the A12, maybe Essex has more than my usual haunts, though I still think it was probably a sensitivity thing. Similar to when you buy or are interested in buying a particular model of less common car, you suddenly start to see them everywhere.

Wasn't there a big crash on A12 today? Maybe they were on their way back from it.
