I have noticed that the safety commercials for motorcyclists are generally aimed at a higher level of roadcraft than car safety adverts. There was one on awhile ago were advanced warnings of all the hazards were popping up all over the place. And there was even a bit of humour at the end when some bird crap fell on his shoulder. This somewhat confirms my theory that bikers are more dedicated and take more of an interest in their ride than car drivers. Would it be fair to say that an advert like this would be wasted on the general car driving public?

That was a good avert; I watch it every so often - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16e8Sm4PeII .

It is equally applicable to sports cars and hot hatches.

That's interesting because your thread wasn't talked about much. I find it surprising because surely an advert such as this would be seen as a glimmer of hope in terms of road safety would it not? It seems that they had the right idea then forgot about it in favour of the new fashion.

Posting in the motorcycling section perhaps restricted the viewings/comments. :)

Comparing it to most of the other road safety films it feels far less contrived and exaggerated, which is odd given it is effectively a fantasy. I put this down to the way that most of the hazards are there to be read by an experienced rider/driver without the ones written on the signs; whereas in other safety videos they have to be deliberately missed or timings and placement of vehicles has to be manipulated to get the desired crash. Another point is the way this film shows how accidents can be avoided by as opposed to how they can be caused, a more positive message perhaps?

Certainly not so clearly, no.

IMHO, that was one of the best road safety commercials I've ever seen. On a separate note, it's also one of my favorites. Both because they don't speak to the motorist like he has some sort of developmental defect.

Could they replace the motorcycle with a car, please? That'd be a good start.

Hello The Rush. It is always interesting to see someone from outsides take on the crazyiness going on in Europe. I would love to visit America one day. Cool laid back cops, big engined muscle cars and roads that are totally deserted for hundreds of miles :bighand: Not to mention the good ole' boys who would lay waste to any sort of over the top "safety" facilities. Too bad I don't like going on airplanes :( You must think it's totally crazy what people complain about on here! Haha  To be honest, I am surprised you keep it up, posting here I mean, because it must be such different worlds that we are living in! A lot of it must be really hard to relate to.

Yep I like it too. :)
They show it up here a fair bit - I tend to think that the subtle way that you can so easily figure out how to recognise the hazards for yourself is best left 'unsaid'.

I certainly think that the car version could be just as subtle, as I believe making people think about things, is better than to spoon feed them. :)

I haven't seen it for ages, but I remember it being shown with the pre-feature ads at the cinema. It's certainly been around a while, I did a Bikesafe day with the Met in 2005 and it's on the DVD of bike stuff that came in the goodie bag they gave out.

Now there's an idea for the campaign - if only we had the money and time.

We do think alike ! :) I had tried to add a line that basically said then add onto You Tube and promote the Campaign .... as it happens ... when things settle down a bit I will go out with camera BUT you've got the equipment ... wonder if I can borrow it - or maybe when I am next (or next down) do some cam testing...
I DO want to do films :) Be great fun :)

It is not so much the cameras as the suction and clamps I have for mounting them, I like to do the odd track day. :)

I also have a small bullet cam with a portable video recorder which is handy for getting shots straight out of the windscreen without interfering with the drivers view.

We may be able to make a video good enough for youtube/web use with standard, i.e cheap, consumer camera kit. I have minimal artistic ability, so while I am happy help if the equipment I have would be useful someone else will have to do the clever production bits.

I bought some edit software a while back not used it much though. Had expected to use it with Paul with things we'd hoped to do but ah well.
When we did the roundabout SMIDSY one Paul took the piccys, and we analysed the best way etc to execute the task, ensuring enough images and location etc .... not that Paul needed me really ! But it was good fun.

The film can be very heavy on size but if saved in appropriate formats it's not bad.

I saw the M/bike advert again last night. :)
